Circular supply chain emphasizes surge in application of reuse, recycling and remanufacturing and thereby promotes the transformation of manufacturing characteristics from linear ('take-produce-utilize-dump') to circular model of flow of products, by-products and waste. Supply chains of manufacturing industries have become global in last few decades. Products manufactured in developing nations like India and China are being sent to developed nations for consumption in higher volumes. Developed nations have the regulatory policies, technological knowhow and modern infrastructure to adopt circular supply chain model. Their counterpart is trailing in these aspects. In literature, limited research work has been performed on identifying challenges of implementing circular supply chain management in developing nations and their contextual association. In this article, based on thorough literature review and feedback received from experts, sixteen important barriers were identified to circular supply chain management adoption in Indian context. The listed barriers were then analysed using an integrated Interpretive Structural Modelling-MICMAC approach. This study attempts to identify the contextual interactions among identified barriers and to examine their hierarchical levels in effective adoption and implementation of circular supply chain management. The findings of this research will contribute in transforming supply chains in terms of bringing economic prosperity, addressing global warming issues and generating numerous employment opportunities. Finally, some crucial policy measures and recommendations are proposed to assist managers and government bodies to adopt and manage the concepts of circular supply chains effectively in Indian context.

Due to rapid industrialization of agriculture, increased global food demand, and, increasing concerns related to food quality and safety, the concept of sustainability and supply chain transparency are becoming critically important to the agriculture and agri-food sector. The addition of sustainability performance objectives not only focuses on the effective utilization and consumption of natural resources, but also drives efforts to balance ecological, economic and societal aspects of agri-food businesses. The management of sustainability adds a new demand on business managers who often have small profits and receive stringent requirements from large powerful customers and retailers. In this paper, we recognize and analyze the key enablers in implementing sustainable initiatives for Agri-Food Supply Chains (A-FSCs). Ten important sustainability driven enablers were considered from a rigorous literature review and phase of expert consultation. The identified enablers were then analyzed using a combined Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM)-fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) based framework. The ISM approach enabled an appreciation of the contextual relationships among the enablers and to classify the enablers based on their driving and dependence potential. The fuzzy DEMATEL technique supported the determination of the influential and influenced enablers and also to categorize them into cause and effect groups. An empirical case study, drawn from a vegetable and fruit retail supply chain in India, is used to focus and test the applicability of the proposed research framework. The paper facilitates professional management practice and researchers to uncover and explore the enablers for the real execution of sustainability oriented initiatives in the agri-food business sector.

Highly automated machine cell which is based on the principle of Group technology, comprising a group of processing work station for the production is referred to as Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), where different processes like material handling, storage system, operation, inspection, etc., are interconnected by the automatic control unit. The concept of FMS (system 24) was first introduced in the mid-1960s to form a system that can operate 16 hours a day without any human attendant. The reason behind selecting this area for research is that there are problems like more lead time, inefficient utilization of machines, more space requirement in a machine shop, and high inventory level in the current manufacturing industry. All these problems can be solved by introducing automation in a manufacturing system, which can be done through FMS. FMS provides better resource utilization, high-quality control, low-cost product, a high rate of production, reduced direct labor requirement, and high labor productivity. Operational issues related to FMS faced by industries are machine loading, scheduling and dispatching, part routing, tool management, and part grouping so there is much scope of future development of FMS if all these issues are resolved.
