A single crystal of Nd3+-doped KGdP4O12 was successfully grown with the top-seeded solution growth and slow cooling (TSSG−SC) technique. It crystallizes in space group C2/c with cell parameters a = 7.812(2) Å, b = 12.307(3) Å, c = 10.474(2) Å, β = 110.84(3)° and Z = 4. The IR and Raman spectra also indicated that the phosphoric polyhedra of Nd:KGdP4O12 has a cyclic symmetry. The chemical composition of the crystal was analyzed and the distribution coefficient of Nd3+ was calculated. The crystal morphology of KGdP4O12 was identified using X-ray diffraction. The compound has good thermal stability to 920°C. Its specific heat and thermal conductivity were determined for potential applications. The spectral properties of Nd:KGdP4O12 indicates that it exhibits broad absorption and emission bands, which are attributed to low symmetry of the crystal. The broad absorption band around 798 nm has a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 14.8 nm and is suitable for AlGaAs laser diode pumping. Moreover, 5 at% Nd3+-doped KGdP4O12 crystal has a long luminescence lifetime of 300 μs and a high quantum efficiency of 96%.

For the first time, Li 3 Ba 2 Gd 3-x (MoO 4 ) 8 :x Eu 3? (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09 mol) red phosphor nanoparticles were prepared using the simple mechanochemically assisted direct solid state reaction method at room temperature and the luminescence effects as a function of Eu 3? ion concentration were studied. The characteristics of the phosphor materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence and kinetic decay. For 7 mol% of Eu 3? concentration, the phosphor exhibits a strong excitation peak at 395 nm signifying a strong absorption. The PL emission spectra of Li 3 Ba 2 Gd 3 (MoO 4 ) 8 :0.07 Eu 3? phosphors exhibited an intense peak at 615 nm (red) which relates to 5 D 0 ? 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3? . The most favourable Eu 3? concentration in Li 3 Ba 2 Gd 3 (MoO 4 ) 8 phosphors for intensified red emission results for 7 mol% and above this concentration, the emission intensity falls off as a result of quenching effect. The CIE color coordinates of the Li 3 Ba 2 Gd 3 (MoO 4 ) 8 :0.07 Eu 3? red phosphor coexist very well with the standard values of NTSC. The red emission intensity of the as prepared Li 3 Ba 2 Gd 3 (MoO 4 ) 8 :0.07 Eu 3? red phosphor is 3.2 times better than that of the commercial Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3? red phosphor prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method.

Tm3+:Li3Ba2Gd3(MoO4)8 crystal has been grown by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method from a Li2MoO4 flux. The room temperature polarized absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and fluorescence decay curves of the crystal were measured. Based on the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory, the main spectroscopic parameters of the crystal, including the spontaneous emission probabilities, fluorescence branching ratios, and radiative lifetimes were calculated and analyzed. The broad and strong absorption bands of the crystal show that it can be efficiently pumped by the diode laser, while the large emission cross-sections of the 3F4 → 3H6 transition indicate that the crystal is a promising candidate for tunable and short pulse lasers.
