Growth responses, excreta quality, nutrient digestibility, bone development and meat yield traits of broiler chickens fed vegetable or animal protein diets

Abstract: This study was carried out to compare the performance of broilers fed diets containing only vegetable protein (VP) with birds that received an animal protein (AP) in their diets. Cobb 500 day-old male broiler chicks (n = 256) were randomly divided into four experimental groups. The two AP diets contained fish meal and soybean (SBF) and fish meal with canola (CMF); while the two VP diets contained predominantly soybean (SBM) or canola (CAN) meals. All diets were isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, and were pellete… Show more

“…Birds of the CMpredominant (T 2 ) diet groups consumed a significantly higher amount of feed than those fed the SBM-predominant (T 1 ) diets, regardless of enzyme supplementation. The results agree with the reports of previous studies (16,17,13). The reason for the greater feed consumption of broiler chickens on enzyme-supplemented diets may be a result of increased fiber digestion, as the fiber tends to create a gut fill.…”

“…Feeding commercial rations has supported the rapid growth rate broilers, but consumers often complain about poor juiciness and taste of chicken meat. Slowing the growth of commercial broilers has shown to improved meat quality and supplementing vegetable waste to slow down their growth rate, supplying only their maintenance requirements, without adding much to the production cost is an emerging trend (Hossain et al, 2013).…”

“…However, it should be also considered that vegetable sources contain numerous antinutritive factors (ANF), lower protein quality, lower digestibility and lower biological value compared with animal sources (Dublecz, 2003;Vieira et al, 2003) and can affect meat quality. Diets with vegetables may possibly be nutritionally inferior and broilers fed on such diets may or may not respond positively (Hossain et al, 2013).…”
