Growth, Photosynthesis, and Nutrient Uptake at Different Light Intensities and Temperatures in Lettuce

Abstract: Light and temperature are two crucial factors affecting plant growth. Light intensities vary considerably with season and weather conditions. Reasonable light regulation at different temperatures is a key issue in environmental regulation. In this study, we determined the effects of light intensity and temperature on crop growth and development. Furthermore, we determined an optimal light value and a suitable light range at different temperatures for producing the lettuce Lactuca sativa Show more

“…This is similar to the previous research (Feijó et al 2009). Interestingly, we found that the leaf number increased with decreased light intensity, which may be the morphological change because E. senticosus adapted to the shading environment (Kim et al 2019, Zhou et al 2019. The reason why Z1 promoted the growth of E. senticosus might Fig.…”

“…Light sources that are derived from energy-saving LEDs are a prospective tool for plant cultivation [ 2 , 3 , 18 , 49 , 50 ] because LED light can have specific narrow spectral bands; its intensity and time regime can be regulated within wide range. The influence of the light characteristics on the plants can be related to both the amount of light that is absorbed by the photosynthetic light harvesting complexes (and the further electron transfer) [ 1 , 2 , 3 ] and to the light-induced activation of the photoreceptors (e.g., phytochromes, cryptochromes, or phototropins [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]).…”

“…The aim of the present work was the analysis of influence of two variants of illumination spectra during cultivation on the physiological parameters of lettuce, including the parameters of photosynthetic dark and light reactions, dark respiration rate, growth parameters, and the main reflectance indices of the leaves. Green leaf lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) was used in this investigation because it is an important agricultural plant that is widely cultivated under artificial illumination (including illumination by LEDs with narrow spectral bands [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ]). The first variant of illumination (the “red” variant) included red and white light with a small portion of the blue light (<10% from the total light intensity and 13% from the red light intensity) because this cultivation variant causes relatively high rates of growth and photosynthesis in lettuce [ 41 , 51 ].…”

“…For plant growth, light is a critical environmental component. Plants use photosynthesis to convert light energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) in light reactions [6].…”
