Growth pattern analysis by stem analysis of Korean white pine(Pinus koraiensis)in the central northern region of Korea

Abstract: The study was performed to find the growth pattern by stem analysis of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) in the Central Northern Region of Korea. One standard tree from each of 16 sites was stemmed and analyzed for the study. For sampled trees, the age range was 16À77 years, diameter at breast height (DBH) was 15.8À44.4 cm, height was 9.3À24.0 m, and stem volume was 0.1002À1.8518 m 3 . The stem volumes by our study had higher values over 40 DBH compared to Korea Forest Research Institute measurements. The b… Show more

“…The percentage of volume growth decreased to 19.6% (age 20), 8.4% (age 40), 2.9% (age 60), 4.0% (age 80) and 2.6% (age 95). Volume growth percentage was much higher than dbh and height growth percentages, which was the similar result to the study on Korean pine by Seo et al (2014). Meanwhile the percentage of volume growth in our study was higher than the percentages by KFRI (2012b).…”

“…3). After removing 3 data with dbh >40 cm, there was no significant difference (p=0.47) in the volumes between our study and KFRI's study (2012), showing the similar trend to the study on Korean pine by Seo et al (2014).…”

“…When different clones are planted in a macro-site with approximately similar environmental conditions, the clonal average allows the selection of excellent genotypes by minimizing environmental effects at the individual level [49]. Average performances of different genotypes helped to establish a clonal ranking to select the elite ones [42].…”

“…The same result was reported by different studies showing an inverse relationship between annual growth rate and age along the longevity, as the age increase, the amount of annual growth decrease (Johnson & Abrams, 2009;Binkley et al, 2002;McMurtrie et al, 1995). A study on another species (Pinus koraiensis) in S. Korea resulted in the way of growth percentages of DBH, height and volume tended to decrease with age particularly rapidly at age 20 -30 (Seo et al, 2014(Seo et al, , 2018. Likewise, in the eastern region of S. Korea the diameter and height growth of Pinus densiflora species felled down rapidly with longevity until age 30 (Seo et al, 2015).…”
