Resumen: Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. es una maleza introducida en algunas partes del mundo, y a menudo se comporta como planta invasora severa en cuerpos acuáticos. Se reporta aquí por primera vez en México. El material botánico se recolectó en los márgenes del río Bravo, dentro del municipio de Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Además de la descripción botánica e ilustración detallada de la especie, se anexa una clave de identifi cación para las especies de Alternanthera registradas en Tamaulipas. La especie es relevante para la conservación de la fl ora nativa de México, por lo que se recomienda la erradicación de las poblaciones descritas y tomar medidas que eviten su diseminación en otros humedales del país. Palabras clave: hidrófi ta, humedales, planta invasora, Tamaulipas.Abstract: Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. is an alien weed in some parts of the world and is often a serious invader of aquatic habitats. Here, it is reported for the fi rst time in Mexico. The botanical material was collected on the banks of Rio Bravo, in the municipality of Matamoros, Tamaulipas. A detailed morphological description and an illustration of this species are included, in addition to a key to the species of Alternanthera occurring in Tamaulipas. The plant is relevant to the conservation of the native fl ora of Mexico; so, we recommend eradication of the populations described and take actions to prevent its spread to other wetlands in the country. Las especies invasoras son organismos transportados por medios naturales o por actividades humanas que llegan a establecerse fuera de su área de distribución natural (CANEI, 2010), y que debido a que son introducidas de regiones distantes, tienen menos enemigos naturales en sus nuevas áreas colonizadas (Ramey, 1990). El éxito del establecimiento y dispersión de una planta invasora depende de varios factores, que incluyen la forma o mecanismo de dispersión, longevidad de sus propágulos, adaptación a las cambiantes condiciones ambientales y habilidad competitiva y reproductiva (Bryson y Carter, 2004).Las plantas invasoras acuáticas causan problemas econó-micos y ecológicos en los ecosistemas acuáticos del mundo (Holm et al., 1977;Weber, 2003). Desde el punto de vista económico, se invierten grandes cantidades de dinero para su control en cuerpos de agua que son relevantes para el ser humano, por ser utilizados en actividades como la recreación, la pesca y la navegación (NAS, 1976;Klingman y Ashton, 1980). La invasión de plantas introducidas a comunidades naturales es una de las amenazas más serias a la biodiversidad, debido a que puede causar el reemplazo y la desaparición de las especies nativas (Callaway et al., 1999;Lonsdale, 1999). Summary Alternanthera philoxeroides is a problematic invasive plant in many regions of the world that is difficult to control once naturalised. It poses a threat to agricultural productivity, biodiversity and social amenity values of aquatic environments. Significant research has been conducted internationally, regarding the efficacy of different herbicides for control of A. philoxeroides. However, no studies have looked at key aspects of control for effective management in an early stage of invasion of aquatic environments, hindering eradication and control programmes. This study evaluates the efficacy of herbicides and surfactants on key A. philoxeroides response metrics, including control of above‐ground biomass, below‐ground biomass and production of viable stem fragments. This study concluded that glyphosate (isopropylamine salt) minimises viable stem fragment production post‐herbicide application, compared with imazapyr and metsulfuron, thus reducing the potential for dispersal throughout catchments and waterways. In contrast, imazapyr and metsulfuron provided more effective control than glyphosate for A. philoxeroides growing on exposed embankments. We propose that an effective management strategy for early invasion of aquatic A. philoxeroides, using herbicides, would be to conduct initial applications of glyphosate to control overwater biomass and limit dispersal of viable stem fragments. Once infestations have been forced back to the embankment, imazapyr or metsulfuron treatments will provide longer term control.

Alternanthera species are invasive aquatic/semi-aquatic weeds posing a serious threat to agro-biodiversity in several countries in the world. The present study was conducted to assess the phytotoxic effects of Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. sessilis residues on emergence and early seedling growth traits of rice (Oryza sativa). Soil was prepared with 4% (w/w) Alternanthera species residues separately and allowed to decay for 0, 15 and 30 days. Rice emergence was significantly decreased but increase in mean emergence time and time to 50% emergence was observed in soils modified with Alternanthera species residues compared with seed sown in unmodified soils. Rice emergence was reduced to 50-67% and 52-75% by A. sessilis and A. philoxeroides, respectively. A significant reduction in rice root, shoot length, and biomass was also noted with Alternanthera-infested soil. Total phenolics increased with increasing residue decay time in both species thereby showing their direct interaction with emergence and seedling traits of rice. The phenolic compounds identified were namely Quercitin, Chlorogenic acid, P-Coumeric acid, Trans-4-hydroxy3-methoxy, Cinamic acid, Caffeic acid, Syringic acid, Sinapic acid, Vanillic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzoic acid.
