Fuel from renewable sources has been an excellent alternative to mineral diesel fuel, either as a substitute or an additive, after the transformation process of oil into biodiesel. Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is considered a good option since it produces high-quality oil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality parameters of samples of physic nut oil processed at different temperatures, as well as to characterize the byproduct press (seed and cake). For this purpose, we evaluated several properties of the oil including acid index, saponification, peroxides, humidity, index of impurities insoluble in ether, ash content, relative density, refractive index, Kreis reaction, color, and mineral content. We also evaluated several properties of the grains and press cake including humidity, ash content, protein content, lipids, fibers, carbohydrates, and minerals. A completely randomized design was used to achieve the results, with three extraction temperatures (70°C, 90°C, and 110°C). Descriptive analysis, normality, analysis of variance, and Tukey's means comparison test were employed at a 5% significance level. Pearson's linear correlation coefficient was also applied. The extraction temperature of 90°C resulted in significant changes in the physical-chemical properties of the oil and press cake.

The safety of Jatropha curcas L. cake (JCC) in animal feed remains under scrutiny, despite the advent of low phorbol ester (PE) variants. This study investigates the impact of low PE JCC on swine health when used as a protein feed. Pigs were fed a 5% JCC diet with a PE concentration of 0.98 mg/kg, which surprisingly still induced toxicity. Symptoms included depression, decreased food intake, increased diarrhea, along with hypothalamus and colon lesions. The toxicity was associated with a decrease in antioxidant enzymes, an increase in inflammatory cytokines in the hypothalamus, plasma, and colon, and a rise in pro‐inflammatory colon microbes and metabolites. Disturbances in neurotransmitters further suggest that this toxicity is related to disruption of the microbiota‐gut‐brain axis, indicating that JCC's toxic elements are not solely due to PE. The sensitivity of pigs to JCC underscores the need for thorough detoxification prior to its use as feed. These findings significantly contribute to the discourse on the safety of low PE JCC in animal feed, highlighting implications for both the feed industry and public health.

Jatropha seed cake (JSC) derived from Jatropha curcas seeds is a by-product of biodiesel production and, due to its high protein content, has been considered as a potential animal feed ingredient. However, the presence of toxic compounds such as phorbol esters and other anti-nutritional factors limits its use in animal feeding. Several detoxification approaches have been used to tackle these constraints and this review aims to summarize the recent advances in JSC treatment aiming to enhance its potential as an animal feedstuff. The review first provides an overview of the structure and composition of phorbol esters and other anti-nutritional compounds, discussing its toxic effects on different animal species. It then explores several detoxification methodologies giving special emphasis to its effects on the nutritional composition of JSC and on the use of the treated substrate as a feed ingredient in fish, poultry, pigs, and ruminants, highlighting their growth performance, nutrient utilization, and animal health issues. Overall, the review concludes that these treatments hold great potential for the detoxification and utilization of JSC as an animal feed ingredient. However, further research is needed to optimize the treatment conditions, evaluate the economic feasibility, and assess the long-term effects of treated JSC on animal health and product quality.
