Palavras-chave: Oreochromis niloticus, vitamina C, ferro, hematologia, desempenho produtivo Levels of Vitamin C and Iron for Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)ABSTRACT -The effects of different levels of vitamin C and iron on growth performance and physiological parameters on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were evaluated for 73 days. A factorial experiment with three levels of vitamin C (125; 375 e 1115 mg/kg) and three levels of iron (30, 90 e 270 mg/kg), plus an additional treatment (with 0 mg/kg of vitamin C and iron), was considered on a completely randomized design, with four replicates for each experimental group. It was randomly stocked 240 reverted fingerlings, an average weight of 7.46 ± 0.49 g, into 40, 250L, aquaria at a density of 6 fish/aquarium. A albumin-gelatin-diet was formulated to contain 32.0% of crude protein and 3,300 kcal/kg of digestible energy. Fingerlings of Nile tilapia fed diet without supplemental vitamin C and iron developed hypochromic microcytic anemia and the supplemental vitamin C determined the presence of immature erythrocytes on blood. It was also determined that iron serum concentration was influenced by vitamin C and iron supplied on diets, and that levels above to nutritional requirements for the specie did not determined detrimental effect on growth performance, plasmatic protein or morphologic characteristics of liver.
Abstract.— Water temperature alterations can determine harmful physiological modifications in fish, which should be prepared to cope with this, and nutrition strategies seem to be essential. This study evaluated the effects of different levels of vitamin C and lipids on physiological responses of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, submitted to temperature stress. There were two phases: Phase I – preparing fish to store vitamin C and lipid at appropriate temperature, and Phase II – evaluating the contributions these reserves make to fish physiology under low‐temperature stress. The experiment used a 3 × 2 factorial design with three vitamin C levels (300, 600, and 1200 mg/kg diet) and two lipid levels (8.0 and 12.0%), plus absence of nutrient test and a diet of 6.0% lipids and 125.0 mg/kg vitamin C. In Phase I, 192 fish were kept at 26.0 ± 1.0 C for 112 d, and in Phase II, 48 fish were kept at 18.0 ± 0.5 C for 32 d and at 15.0 ± 0.5 C for 11 d. Fish fed C0L0 diet showed lower erythrocytes values in both phases; higher vitamin C supplement determined higher red blood cell (RBC) number and higher hematocrit (Htc) (Phase II); Htc was significantly lower in Phase II; after temperature stress, fish fed C0L0 diet had higher mean corpuscular volume, lower hemoglobin corpuscular concentration, and significantly lower vitamin C concentration in the liver; and higher supplementation determined a higher concentration in the liver (Phases I and II). Higher plasmatic cortisol concentration was seen in fish fed C0L0 diet. In conclusion, our results show that the absence of vitamin C in diets impairs RBC formation and does not enable fish to cope with stress; excess vitamin C is efficient in mitigating stress and 600 mg/kg diet is economic and physiologically sufficient to prepare fish for coping with low‐temperature stress. Lipid supplementation does not determine alterations in stress biochemical parameters.

Growth performance of Nile tilapia fingerlings fed on yeast and yeast derivativesAbstract -The objective of this work was to assess growth perfomance and chemical-bromatological fillet composition of Nile tilapia fed on rations containing whole yeast, autolyzed yeast and yeast wall cell. Practical diets, isoproteic (32% of digestible protein), isoenergetic (3,200 kcal of digestible energy per kg) and supplemented by whole yeast (1, 2 and 3%), autolyzed yeast (1, 2 and 3%) and yeast cell wall (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3%), and a control diet without test ingredients were assessed. The experimental design was completely randomized, with ten treatments and four replicates. Animals fed on yeast and yeast derivatives supplemented diets showed enhanced growth performance compared to control. No difference on chemical-bromatological fillet composition was observed among contrast of totals of treatment. Yeast and yeast derivatives supplementation provided improvement on fish growth performance and inclusion of autolyzed yeast showed better growth performance when supplemented with 1.30 to 1.59%.
Biofloc technology system (BFT), recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) and polyculture promote efficient use of water, area and nutrient recycling, which are essential practices for sustainable aquaculture development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth, feed efficiency, biofloc composition and water quality of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) in monoculture and polyculture with giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1906) in BFT and RAS, over a period of 30 days. Fish (n = 128; 7.29 ± 0.67 g) were distributed randomly in 16 experimental tanks (8 fish/tank). Prawn (n = 96; 0.50 ± 0.09 g) were allocated in 8 experimental tanks (12 prawn/tank) in a polyculture. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments with four replicates each, in a factorial design 2 9 2 (BFT and RAS vs. monoculture and polyculture). The experimental diet (28% of digestible protein; 3100 kcal kg-1 of digestible energy) was used both to fish and prawn in BFT and RAS. There was significant effect (p \ 0.01) of the system and the culture for weight gain, apparent feed conversion and protein efficiency ratio. The average weight gain and apparent feed conversion of tilapia in monoculture (30.04 g and 1.39) and in polyculture (36.44 g and 1.27) were superior (p \ 0.01) in BFT than in monoculture (23.64 g and 1.74) and in polyculture (24.14 g and 1.61) in RAS. Weight gain and survival of giant freshwater prawn was superior (p \ 0.01) in BFT (0.43 g and 87%) compared to RAS (0.26 g and 79%). The data showed that BFT provides better growth performance responses in monoculture for Nile tilapia and in polyculture with giant freshwater prawn compared to RAS.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increased levels (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8%) of a combination of β-glucans and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) in isonitrogenous (23% of digestible protein) and isoenergetic (13.38 MJ of digestible energy kg-1) pacu diets, corresponding to five treatments and four replicates. A 30-day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects on growth performance, hematological parameters, and intestinal morphology. Fish (n = 160, 30.92 ± 0.46 g) were distributed randomly in 20 aquaria (300 L) with a recirculating water system with controlled temperature (26.20 ± 0.32°C) and fed four times a day until apparent satiation. A quadratic effect (P < 0.05) was observed for weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER). The hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic indexes, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) did not show differences (P > 0.05) among treatments. Pacu fed β-glucans and MOS at 0.1 and 0.2% resulted in the greatest (P < 0.05) villus height and perimeter. The diet containing 0.2% β-glucans and MOS promoted the best growth response, feed efficiency, and intestinal morphology, without detrimental effects on the hematological parameters for juvenile pacu.
We tested the efficacy of a commercial product (Glucan-MOS) derived from yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, containing two combined products, β-1,3-1,6 glucans and mannans on the growth, feed efficiency, stress and innate immune responses of juvenile pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) after a stressful handling and bacterial inoculation. For this, we evaluated the serum cortisol and plasma glucose levels, the respiratory activity of leukocytes, the serum lysozyme levels, as well as the number of circulating erythrocytes and leukocytes of fish fed during 30 days with diets containing increased levels of Glucan-MOS (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8%). The supplementation of 0.1% improved weight gain, feed conversion and the protein efficiency ratio compared to a control diet. The 0.2 and 0.4% Glucan-MOS diets were sufficient to increase the respiratory burst of leukocytes and lysozyme activity, the number of thrombocytes, neutrophils and monocytes in the blood after a stressful handling and bacterial challenge, and minimized stress response as shown by decreased cortisol and glucose levels when compared to the control. The results of this work reinforce the benefits of the adoption of feeding strategies including combination of both β-1,3-1,6 glucans and mannans as a dietary supplement in periods prior to intensive management. The 30-day period was sufficient to stimulate growth performance, improve nutrient utilization, minimize stress response and modulate innate immunity responses.
