Growth hormone

Abstract: A number of tissues, including the brain, pituitary, immune system, placenta, mammary gland, and testis, may be self-contained units of GH regulation, production, and action. The production of GH and GH-releasing factors outside the hypothalamo-pituitary axis complements, rather than replaces, the traditional endocrine interactions between GH-releasing factors, GH, and its target tissues.

“…The growth performance of fish is controlled by the growth hormone (GH), which is regulated by the Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) (Harvey and Hull, 1997;Katoh et al, 1999). The results showed upregulated GH and IGF-1 genes in the livers of tilapia treated with synbiotics.…”

“…Embora a maior parte do hormônio do crescimento seja produzida pela glândula pituitária, diversos outros tecidos apresentam uma produção discreta do hormônio. Além da função autócrina, o hormônio do crescimento também desempenha função parácrina, ou seja, participação de comunicação célula-célula 4 .…”

“…On the other hand, it is known that GH has a paracrine effect on bone, besides the well-known endocrine action (21). However, only a few papers have evaluated whether IGF-I could have a local effect on bone.…”
