Growth factor receptors signaling in glioblastoma cells: therapeutic implications

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the protein expression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR), insulin like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) in five primary glioblastoma (GB), with a view to their possible use as therapeutic targets. Our results demonstrated that appreciable levels of these proteins could be detected in the analysed GB cell lines, except for a low level of PDGFR and ERK1/2 expression in one GB… Show more

“…It has been demonstrated that many growth factor receptor families, such as epithelial growth factor receptor (EGF-R), platelet derived growth factor receptor (PDGF-R), and vascular endothelium growth factor receptor (VEGF-R), and their mutations, are involved in pathogenesis of GBM 612. There is evidence that primary and secondary GBM have a different molecular-genetic basis, however, treatment has not been stratified by these findings so far 2,1315…”

“…Empirical in vitro experimental data indicates these must all be inhibited [40,41] . The proposed intervention -cathepsin B inhibition with auranofi n -would be a small link in that long chain.…”

“…Although advances have been achieved in cancer therapy by using modern techniques and therapeutic approaches such as personalized targeted therapy, the solid tumor cells are generally resistant to treatment and patients continue to exhibit a poor prognosis [91]. The concept that tumor development and progression depends on the evolution of CSCs dramatically changes the possibilities in which cancer can be cured.…”
