Growth enhancement of soybean (Glycine max) upon exclusion of UV-B and UV-B/A components of solar radiation: characterization of photosynthetic parameters in leaves

Abstract: Exclusion of UV (280-380 nm) radiation from the solar spectrum can be an important tool to assess the impact of ambient UV radiation on plant growth and performance of crop plants. The effect of exclusion of UV-B and UV-A from solar radiation on the growth and photosynthetic components in soybean (Glycine max) leaves were investigated. Exclusion of solar UV-B and UV-B/A radiation, enhanced the fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area as well as induced a dramatic increase in plant height, which reflected a net incr… Show more

“…This suggests that the decreases in respiration rate were largely due to crop growth inhibited by enhanced UV-B. It has been well recognized that enhanced UV-B inhibited crop growth and decreased the biomass of crop Kakani et al 2003;Kadur et al 2007;Yao et al 2008). Kadur et al (2007) assessed the impact of UV-B on soybean (Glycine max) growth by filtering off UV-B radiation, and found that exclusion of UV-B enhanced the fresh weight, dry weight and biomass of soybean.…”

“…It is well documented that enhanced UV-B inhibits crop growth Kakani et al 2003;Kadur et al 2007;Yao et al 2008) and influences indirectly the soil microbial populations and activities (Johnson et al 2002(Johnson et al , 2003Robson et al 2004). Crop growth and soil microbial activities are the main factors influencing plant respiration and N 2 O emissions from croplands, however, enhanced UV-B effects on the greenhouse gases emission have rarely been examined in agroecosystems.…”

“…High levels of ultraviolet radiation influence negatively on carbon assimilation rate and growth of plants [31]. The alterations in plant height, branching pattern and leaf size of soybean plants were observed in UV-excluded sunlight when compared to control plants.…”

“…In addition, the exclusion of solar UV-B and UV-B/A radiation increased the plant height (30% for exclusion of UV-B and 60% for exclusion of UV-B/A). Thus, the solar spectrum causes changes in soybean growth and morphological developments [31]. The exclusion of the UV-B/A radiation also caused elongated internodes in soybean plants, resulting in greater plant height.…”

“…Al igual que en el caso del crecimiento, los efectos de la radiación en el peso de las plantas pueden variar con la especie vegetal estudiada. Diferentes autores han constatado que la producción de biomasa (peso fresco-seco) era inhibida por la radiación UV-B o UV-A+B (Krizek et al, 1997;Kadur et al, 2007), aunque otros estudios obtuvieron resultados opuestos, como un efecto nulo (Garzón, 2015b) o un incremento del peso seco vegetal (Liu et al, 2005).…”
