This study evaluated the hematological parameters of tambacu and patinga, two the hybrid serrasalmid fishes farmed in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, with emphasis on the influence of seasons on them. Two-hundred forty hybrid fishes, 120 tambacus and 120 patingas, were collected over 12 months to assess their hematological parameters and compare them between the warm (October-March) and cold seasons (April-September). Water quality parameters were also measured weekly to test for the influence of environmental conditions on the results. The dissolved oxygen content in the water decreased in the warm season, and increased in the cold season. In the warm season, tambacus presented significantly higher values (p<0.05) of the total plasmatic protein (TPP), hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and eosinophil count parameters. In the cold season, counts of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, total leukocytes, lymphocytes, and neutrophils were higher in tambacus (p<0.05). For patinga, MCV was higher in the warm season, while hemoglobin, erythrocytes, MCHC, total leukocytes, and basophil counts were higher (p<0.05) in the cold season. These results demonstrated the influences of seasonality on the hematological parameters of the hybrids tambacu and patinga when held under normal farming conditions in the region. PARÂMETROS HEMATOLÓGICOS DE SERRASALMÍDEOS HÍBRIDOSCULTIVADOS NA REGIÃO CENTRO-OESTE DO BRASIL RESUMO Este estudo avaliou os parâmetros hematológicos de híbridos tambacu e patinga cultivados no Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, com ênfase na influência das épocas do ano. Duzentos e quarenta peixes híbridos, 120 tambacus e 120 patingas, foram coletados ao longo de 12 meses para análises hematológicas, comparando a estação quente (Outubro-Março) com a estação fria (Abril-Setembro). Os parâmetros de qualidade de água foram medidos semanalmente, para verificar sua influência sobre os parâmetros hematológicos. A estação quente mostrou tendência ao declínio nos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido, enquanto na estação fria ocorreu o inverso. Na estação quente, tambacus apresentaram valores mais altos (p<0,05) de proteína plasmática total (TPP), concentração de hemoglobina, volume corpuscular médio (MCV), concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média (MCHC) e número de eosinófilos. Na estação fria, as contagens de eritrócitos, trombócitos, leucócitos totais, linfócitos e neutrófilos foram mais altas (p<0,05). Em patingas, valores mais altos de MCV foram observados na estação quente, enquanto a concentração de hemoglobina, eritrócitos, MCHC, leucócitos totais e basófilos foram mais altos (p<0,05) na estação fria. Os resultados mostram influência da sazonalidade sobre os parâmetros hematológicos dos híbridos tambacu e patinga mantidos em condições típicas de cultivo na região.

-This experiment was conducted in outdoor tanks to evaluate the effect of inclusion of ractopamine at increasing levels (0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 mg kg −1 ) as additive in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) diet in the final grow-out period (750-920 g) during 31 days. Therefore, 400 fish were housed into 20 experimental tanks, in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications. Growth performance, body yield, and chemical composition of fish muscle and organs were evaluated. Fish fed diets containing up to 16 mg kg −1 of ractopamine for 31 days did not improve growth or performance parameters. However, lipid percentage of abdominal muscle was different in fish fed ractopamine, reaching the lowest level of 199.3 g kg −1 of ether extract at 8 mg kg −1 treatment. Other body chemical composition parameters did not differ between animals treated or not treated. Feeding ractopamine up to 31 days has limited effect on body composition in Nile tilapia (~900 g), without any changes in growth parameters. This is a lower metabolic response in this species when compared with mammals and other terrestrial animals.

An experiment was conducted during 60 days with forty pacu males fed diets supplemented with increasing concentrations of ractopamine (0.00, 11.25, 22.50, 33.75, and 45.00 mg kg −1). Eight fish were evaluated for each experimental diet. Performance and survival rate of the fish were measured. At the end of the experiment, blood was collected to determine the levels of cortisol, triacylglycerol, and protein. Moreover, the liver was collected to determine the activities of glucose-6phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzymes. The fillets were collected to determine chemical composition, and histologic cuts were analyzed to verify muscle growth and deposition of adipose tissue between muscle fibers. Increasing concentrations of dietary ractopamine did not change feed intake, fillet yield, fillet content of protein and ash, and frequency of relative distribution of muscle fibers. By increasing the dietary ractopamine concentration, the serum cortisol level was elevated. Ractopamine supplementation (45.00 mg kg −1) increased serum levels of triacylglycerol and protein and reduced the activity of hepatic lipogenic enzymes and the survival rate of the fish, probably in response to the high concentration of circulating cortisol. In addition, the higher level of ractopamine supplementation evaluated in this research impaired the weight gain and feed conversion. However, 11.25 mg kg −1 ractopamine reduced the ether extract level determined in the fillet and the fat deposition between muscle fibers, improving the nutritional quality of meat.
