Growth, body composition and hematology of juvenile pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) fed increasing levels of ractopamine

Abstract: Growth, body composition and hematology of juvenile pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus)fed increasing levels of ractopamine [Crescimento, composição corporal ABSTRACTThe effects of four levels of dietary ractopamine (RAC) on growth, body composition and hematology of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus juveniles (103.6±3.3g) were studied. Fish were housed into 12 circular tanks of 1 m 3  15 fish per tank  and fed for 60 days with practical diets supplemented with 0; 10; 20 or 40mg RAC per kg of diet, in a totally ra… Show more

“…Tambacu and patinga presented higher total plasmatic protein (TPP) concentrations compared to those of pacu (P. mesopotamicus) (Sado et al, 2013Bicudo et al, 2014;Jerônimo et al, 2014) and pirapitinga (P. brachypomus) (Vásquez-Torres et al, 2012). In tambacu, higher values were observed in the warm season.…”

“…Bicudo et al (2012) obtained better responses in experiments by using pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) fingerlings and Mustin and Lovell (1995) reported positive results when ractopamine was administered to younger animals. also reported positive results with rainbow trout juveniles.…”

“…The basal diet provided the nutritional demands for Nile tilapia at the growth phase, according to Furuya et al (2010). The diets were supplemented with 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 mg kg −1 ractopamine, according to values used in fish experiments (Mustin and Lovell, 1995;Bicudo et al, 2012;Devens et al, 2012), replacing the inert element (sand) contained in the diet and pelletizing it (5 mm diameter). The ractopamine used here is a commercial product in powder form, composed of ractopamine hydrochloride (2 g 100 g −1 ) and inert carrier, which was mixed together with the feed ingredients before processing.…”

“…As there is no global consensus on ractopamine use in meat production, the scientific community needs to generate more information about the safety and animal performance effectiveness of this beta-adrenergic agonist. In this context, there are few studies about the use of ractopamine in diets for pacu (Bicudo et al, 2012;Oliveira et al, 2014), signaling the need for further work in this area.…”
