Abstract: This randomized controlled trial demonstrates the beneficial effect of the consumption of a nutrient-enriched formula after hospital discharge by AGA infants both in terms of head circumference growth and fat-free mass gain.

“…24 Furthermore, also the growth of head circumference in the first six months of life is better in infants fed with PDF than standard formula. 25 Some clinicians suggest that babies should receive PDF at least until a post-conceptional age of 40 weeks, but possibly until about 52 weeks of post-conceptional age. 13,26 So, short term advantages of PDF are demonstrated but on the contrary, at age 8 years no differences were found in body size, body composition, bone variables and metabolic health variables when comparing infants fed with PDF with those fed with standard formulas.…”

“…However, protein intake in the neonatal period will not necessarily have an impact on growth indices in childhood (59). A high protein intake in the in-hospital as well as in the post discharge period seems to decrease fat mass and increase lean mass up to 6 mo corrected age (61)(62)(63). Whether this trend persists into childhood is not known.…”

“…Furthermore, Roggero et al (11) described beneficial effects of a nutrient-enriched formula compared with a standard TF on gain in head circumference and LM in the first 6 mo of life in preterm infants born with an appropriate size for their gestational age (GA).…”
