Experimental studies were conducted on 36 grouted splices to investigate their mechanical performance under four loading schemes: (1) incremental tensile loading, (2) repeated tensile loading, (3) cyclic loading at high stress, and (4) cyclic loading at large strain. Load-deformation responses of the grouted splices under cyclic loadings were featured with pinching effect and stiffness degradation compared to those responses under tensile loadings. The shape of the hysteresis loops of load-deformation curves was similar to that under incremental tensile loading. For the purpose of structural analysis, stress-strain relationships were presented for grouted splices under various loadings.Keywords: sleeve connector, grouted splice, cyclic loading, stress-strain relationship. This paper presents an experimental study of a new grouted splice connection for wall panels, called Welded Bar Sleeve (WBS). The connections were made from steel pipes and tested with incremental tensile, shear and flexural loads until failure. The aim is to determine the behaviour of the connection under the three load cases. For this, the connections are evaluated in terms of the load-displacement responses, ultimate capacities, ductility responses and some feasibility assessment criteria. WBS was found to provide sufficient strength at the bar embedded length of 8, 8 and 11 times the bar diameter under tensile, shear and flexural loads, respectively. It is effective under tension, but could only service up to 1/3 of its ultimate shear capacity. Flexural load is the most critical load case for the connection. For this, further enhancements are required when subjected to shear and flexural loads.

An experimental program concerning 48 specimens of grouted sleeve splices, first heated up to 600°C and then subjected to cyclic loading was presented and discussed in this study. Similar rebar splices were often used in the precast concrete structures designed for seismic regions. The temperature of the splice and the compressive strength of the grout were the main variables considered in this study. It is found that the temperature mainly affected the peak bearing capacity of the grout and the failure pattern of the connection. In fact, the typical failure pattern at room temperature (rebar fracture outside the sleeve) turned to rebar pullout of the sleeve above 400°C, which indicated that below this temperature grout‐to‐rebar bond kept most of its original efficacy. On the contrary, bond failure occurred for all specimens at 600°C because of rebar slip. A calculation method was proposed as well to evaluate the peak bearing capacity of grouted sleeve splice, based on the load transferring mechanisms of the bond between grout‐to‐rebar and sleeve‐to‐grout. The conducted experimental study and analysis provide a better understanding on the bond mechanism of thermally damaged grouted sleeve splices subjected to cyclic loading.
