“…Strains 8/66 and 24/60 were used for the preparation of antisera to the group polysaccharide and to protein X, respectively. Antisera were elicited in rabbits according to the modified immunization scheme of Jelinkova (1977). A single dose (0.5 ml) was given, and then 7 d later three doses were administered on three successive days for 4 weeks.…”

“…III and non-typable by the GP method. The presence of crossreacting protein antigens such as the X and R antigens described by Jelinkova (1977) and Wilkinson (1975) may have been responsible for discrepant Ib and 111 type allocations but was not proved. When strains classed as non-typable by GP were allocated to types by other methods, we cannot be certain which result should be viewed as wrong.…”

“…Other cross-reacting serotypes (Il/Ib, II/Ic etc.) are occasionally found and a small percentage of human isolates are nontypable (Jelinkova, 1977). The serotype classification is also significant because immunity to group B streptococci appears to be type-specific, certain serotypes appear more virulent than others and immunotherapy has been proposed for certain infections (Shigeoka, Hall and Hill, 1978).…”

“…Jensen (1980) found R-protein in 93% of type I11 strains from the female urogenital tract in Denmark whereas Jelinkova (1977) reported that only 16% of human type I11 isolates in Czechoslovakia contained R-protein; the differences in results might be ascribable to mucosal adherence because the strains reported by Jelinkova were unselected. However, the present results clearly indicate that R-protein might contribute to the capacity of GBS type 111 to colonise the mucosal membranes.…”
