Groundwater Vulnerability in Karst of Jahorina

Abstract: Analysis has studied northern part of Jahorina, Ravna Mountain, whose karst plateau presents water aggregation surface for Paljanska Miljacka and Bistrica flows, which are used as water supply for Sarajevo and Pale. This paper presented hydrogeological and hydrological characteristics of the area and applied analyzes of other physical-geographic characteristics which are an essential indicator of the quality of groundwater. Applying various methods, we have obtained maps that shows different ways of groundwate… Show more

“…Sensitivity refers to the physical properties of the space that determine the predisposition that in the case of exposure to negative influences, pollution and environmental hazards will occur in the area [44,40]. The vulnerability of groundwater and surface water is especially emphasized, since this area is rich in watercourses that are used both for economic purposes and for water supply of households [45,13]. Sensitivity factors analyzed are soil cover, hydrogeological properties of the substrate, land slope and distance from watercourses.…”

“…investigated the impact of solid waste management on human health [9]. Many researchers studied the impact of illegal landfills on environmental components such as land degradation [10,11], water contamination [12,13], degradation of soil and vegetation [14].…”

“…The springs of these rivers are located in karst area and are specific on their appearance forms and high natural values. The area of the spring of Paljanska Miljacka is protected, due to the water supply of Pale settlement as well as because of the occurrence of large deposits, waterfalls and cascades on the wider area of the spring [18]. The spring of the Mokranjska Miljacka River is one of the longest caves in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.…”

“…Limestones of Middle and Lower Triassic form the basis of the explored area, where dominate thick-bedded (banked) limestones and massive limestones and dolomites of Middle Triassic (in particular the layers of Anisian with a share of over 35%). Lower Triassic karst is represented at a lower rate, mainly as thick-bedded (banked) Megaladon limestones and thinbedded (striped) limestones 18% (Golijanin, Ćulafić, Petronić, & Matović, 2017).…”

“…The main goal is to determine the degree of endangerment of karst area based on the ratio between population density and the area under the karst, and to make classification of the City settlements by the degree of vulnerability. The threats to karst terrains, as well as the population on the karst areas were processed earlier in scientific papers (Golijanin et al, 2017;Ravbar & Goldscheider, 2007;Tolmachev, 2013;etc. ).…”
