Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar um índice para caracterização da suscetibilidade dos solos à contaminação do lençol freático, bem como realizar um estudo de caso exploratório para os solos do bioma Cerrado. O índice de tempo de retenção (TR) de água nos solo foi determinado a partir de valores médios, obtidos por meio de uma metodologia de filtragem, em bases de dados das seguintes propriedades do solo: espessura de horizontes; granulometria; teor de carbono orgânico; densidades global e de partículas; e umidade na capacidade de campo. A profundidade do lençol freático foi estimada com uso do modelo Hand. As distribuições espaciais dos dados de entrada e dos resultados do índice TR foram obtidas com uso de um aplicativo de sistema de informação geográfica. Os solos que oferecem menor proteção à contaminação do lençol freático por contaminantes químicos orgânicos estão localizados nas regiões Sudeste e Centroleste do Mato Grosso, no Oeste da Bahia, no Sudoeste de Goiás e no Norte de Mato Grosso do Sul. Os solos predominantes nas áreas mais suscetíveis são Neossolos Quartzarênicos órticos e Latossolos Vermelhos distróficos.Termos para indexação: gestão territorial, ocupação do solo, poluição do solo, recursos hídricos, serviço ecossistêmico, sistema de informação geográfica. Groundwater contamination susceptibility as a function of soil properties in the Brazilian CerradoAbstract -The objective of this work was to present an index for the characterization of soil susceptibility to groundwater contamination, as well as to perform an exploratory study of the soils from the Brazilian Cerrado biome. The water retention time (RT) index was determined with mean values obtained from a filtering methodology, in databases of the following soil properties: depth of the horizons; granulometry; organic carbon content; bulk density and particle density; and moisture content at field capacity. The water table depth was estimated using the Hand model. Spatial distributions of input data and TR index results were obtained using a geographic information system software. Soils that offer low protection to groundwater contamination by organic chemicals are located in southeast and east-central regions of the state of Mato Grosso, in the western of the state of Bahia, in the south of Goiás, and in the north of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The predominant soil classes in the more susceptible areas are "Neossolos Quartzarênicos órticos" (Entisols) and "Latossolos Vermelhos distróficos" (Oxisols).

Given the importance of the groundwater for diverse uses, particularly the public supply, and considering the increasing impacts on underground reserves as a result of overexploitations, as well as the degradation of the water quality by anthropogenic activities, it becomes essential to establish tools for planning and management of the use of groundwater resources. For this reason, the aim this paper is to assess the natural vulnerability to contamination of the Bauru Aquifer System, in the South-Central region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Therefore, a vulnerability map was generated by using the (S) method, a new proposal developed to estimate the vulnerability by means of the Dar Zarrouk parameter -longitudinal conductance (electrical resistivity method). The vulnerability classes were defined using values ranges of longitudinal conductance: from very low (> 2.5 siemens) to extreme (< 0.1 siemens). In applying this methodology in the unsaturated zone, the electrical resistivity of the first layer of the saturated zone was used, seeing that the materials of both zones are similar in the study area. The application of the (S) method produced good outcomes, generating a more detailed map, with greater classes variability that indicate the sensitivity of this method, predominating regions with low vulnerability, and secondly, moderately vulnerable areas.

To implement successful policies for the protection of groundwater and curtail the possibility of water supply contamination, an early evaluation of aquifer vulnerability is needed. Rather than implementing broad restrictions to land use and effluent discharge, it is more cost-effective and economically favourable to approach protection in a stepwise manner by first assessing the intrinsic vulnerability of the aquifer when defining the level of land use control that is needed to protect groundwater quality. Following aquifer vulnerability evaluation, specific land uses and restrictions should be defined locally for each water supply within the wellhead protection areas (WHPAs), which are identified by means of the groundwater time of travel (TOT). The WHPA should be established for each individual situation, considering the level of vulnerability of the exploited aquifer. We applied our findings to a specific test site in the Piemonte region of NW Italy, following the current local procedure for individuating the WHPAs. Using data gathered from this site-specific exercise, we identified that the procedure allows methods that consider only aquifer parameters to evaluate vulnerability and discourages the use of techniques that already compartmentalize soil parameters in the vulnerability assessment.
