“…According to an early investigation by the U.S. EPA, E. coli has the highest correlation to swimming-associated diseases at freshwater beaches on the east coast of the U.S. [85]. First, it shows a strong association with fecal pollution, as it is found in all feces of warm-blooded animals and a few reptiles at high concentrations [54,86], and remains at detectable levels in waters subject to animal fecal pollution, such as sewage, rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastal areas [87,88].
