Grounded theory in psychological research.

Abstract: Generating theory that is grounded in semistructured interviews, fieldwork observations, case-study notes, or other forms of textual documentation is one important principle of much qualitative social science today. It is often specifically associated with the methodological approach adopted by the American sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss during their investigation of the institutional care of the terminally ill (1965), which they subsequently termed grounded theory (1967). Grounded theory studie… Show more

“…After consulting a number of sources concerning qualitative analysis software (Henwood & Pidgeon, 2003;Lewins & Silver, 2007;Lewis, 2004;Muhr, 2006), I chose Atlas.ti because it features easy coding procedures and is the only qualitative analysis software that can integrate text documents and video. This has several advantages related to navigation, a feature that has been cited in recent qualitative music education research as one of the main advantages of using software in qualitative analysis (Campbell, Connell, & Beegle, 2007).…”

“…The qualitative analysis package NVivo was used to conduct an interpretive qualitative analysis of the data. Based on grounded theory [43][44][45][46], the analytical process followed these steps. Starting with open-coding of the data set, a series of both descriptive and theoretical categories were identified to produce a grounded (rather than pre-prescribed) coding framework.…”

“…Importantly, this proposed departure from parsimonious approaches -for example: bi-partite for Nicholls ' (1989) achievement goals; tri-partite for Elliot's (1999) achievement goals and also Deci and Ryan's (1985) basic needs theory (from self-determination theory -SDT); and quad-partite for Elliot and McGregor's (2001) two-by-two framework -also required the adoption of what is termed a 'theoretically agnostic' approach (Sandelowski 1993, Henwood andPidgeon 2003). This would involve declining to adopt a single guiding explanatory framework a priori and instead engaging with the data in the full knowledge of existing theories (i.e.…”
