Ground-based measurements of local cloud cover

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…A personal computer routine provided by the manufacturer controls the equipment and processes the captured images, determining the percentage of the sky covered by clouds (cloud cover). Uncertainties in the measurements by the TSI are higher than 10%, except for overcast or cloudless skies to which uncertainties can be lower .…”

“…Silva and Souza‐Echer () have developed a routine to obtain the local cloud cover (LCC) based on the analysis of digital images from a ground‐based automatic imager. LCC is defined as the running average of values of cloud cover within a given field of view (around 100°) from images taken within a time interval T shifted forwards in time steps of Δ T .…”

“…Aiming at contributing to the replacement of CC HO by LCC, the present study (1) compares almost 3 years of LCC data from a Total Sky Imager set up in a tropical, urban site with data of CC HO and (2) validates the routine proposed by Silva and Souza‐Echer () for the determination of LCC. Section explains the site and instruments, which is followed by Section referring to the analysis of the data.…”
