Grip Strength, Mental Performance and Nutritional Status as Indicators of Mortality Risk Among Female Geriatric Patients

Abstract: The study involved 82 consecutive acute admissions of female patients to a geriatric ward. A wide range of medical diagnoses was represented. The patients were assessed in relation to anthropometric measurements (grip strength, mid-arm circumference, triceps skin-fold, and arm muscle circumference), mental test score and serum albumin. The prognostic significance of these variables was considered with regard to mortality. Those who died had significantly lower grip strength (P less than 0.01), arm muscle circu… Show more

“…Several studies in different groups of pa tients have shown malnutrition to be associ ated with higher complication rates, and higher morbidity and mortality [56], With regard to body weight or BMI, it has been reported that overnutrition and obesity are associated with lower, and undernutrition and unsatisfactory nutritional status with higher mortality rates in geriatric patients [ 12,57] as well as in healthy elderly [58,59], Relationships between anthropometric data and mortality in geriatric patients have also been reported by Friedman et [12,22,60], Our data show that, in addition, total protein, prealbumin. RBP and transferrin are of prognostic value.…”

“…Grip strength (GS) is a strong predictor of disability (Ishizaki et al 2000;Kuh et al 2005;Nybo et al 2001;Rantanen et al 1994;Rantanen et al 1999), morbidity (Alfaro-Acha et al 2006;Albrand et al 2003;Klidjian et al 1980;Rantanen et al 1998aRantanen et al , 2000aRantanen et al , 2003, frailty (Syddall et al 2003), and mortality (Fujita et al 1995;Metter et al 2002;Milne and Maule 1984;Philips 1986;Sasaki et al 2007), even in initially healthy middle-aged men followed for 30 years (Rantanen et al 2000a(Rantanen et al , 2000b. GS can thus be seen as a proxy for health; additionally, the measurement of GS is cheap and easily carried out even by trained survey interviewers in nonclinical settings.…”

“…Some prospective studies have also indicated these measures as predictors of mortality [3,5,7,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. It has therefore been suggested that physical performance measures should be implemented in clinical as well as research settings to improve the evaluation of older persons.…”
