Сarbon dioxide fluxes from substrates and consortiums were estimated for the first time in the photic zones of seven caves of Montenegro. The dependence of consortiums productivity with their species composition and structure, as well as determination of the priority source of carbon dioxide for the primary producers of trophic chains of the photic zones were revealed.Five consortiums were distinguished in the fouling communities of the photic zones of seven karst caves of Montenegro: with the dominance of acrocarpous mosses, pleurocarpous mosses, green algae, cyanobacteria biofilms and sheath-forming cyanobacteria on various substrates. The closed chamber technique was used to calculate carbon fluxes. The net carbon flux, gross respiration of substrates and consortiums, and gross primary production of consortiums in the summer and winter were determined. The biomass of the phototrophic and heterotrophic components of the consortiums was estimated. Isotopic analysis of clay deposits and phytomass of bryophytes in the consotriums as well as on the surface was carried out. All of the investigated consortiums function as a carbon sink in both seasons, providing a negative balance to the atmosphere. Consortiums with the dominance of bryophytes possessed the greatest biomass, spores of micromycetes dominated in the heterotrophic component. The respiration of substrates was maximized on clay deposits, the respiration rate increased in winter. Phototrophic respiration and gross primary production were maximal in the consortiums of acrocarpous mosses and case-forming cyanobacteria in terms of dry phytomass. Increased content of the light carbon isotope 12C in the bryophytes phytomass in the photic zones compared to the bryophytes phytomass on the surface was established.

Background The soils of the boreal zone contain significant reserves of carbon, therefore, their response to current climate changes will significantly affect the sustainability of forest ecosystems and the future concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere. When modeling soil emission, it is necessary to focus on the main soil environment factors. In this paper, a simple exponential model of the soil CO 2 emissions growth was modified by introducing an additional parameter - the threshold soil moisture in different types of ecosystems based on the direct measurements. Results The developed model adequately reflects the dynamic changes in soil emission for different types of ecosystems. This result was achieved by including moisture as a second environmental factor besides temperature, describing changes in soil CO 2 emissions during the summer period. The error of direct measurements for all measuring seasons was about 20% of the values of direct measurements of the CO 2 flux. Note that such a high error was observed once per season in early and mid-June, reaching 60-80% on some days. Our models demonstrate in the season with the highest amount of precipitation the smallest differences in modeled fluxes about 15-20%, which indirectly indicates that the emission flux is not inhibited by insufficient moisture in this season. Conclusions The final model application depends on the characteristics of the microclimatic conditions of a particular ecosystem, namely, a factor that has a limiting effect on the biological processes. When studying the functional role of boreal forest ecosystems the moisture conditions consideration is crucial to explain the atmospheric CO 2 emission processes.

We analyzed four years field observations (2017–2020) of soil CO2 efflux from Chernozems of arable and foreststeppe ecosystems of Kursk region (Russia), which correspond to the period of the maximal current warming. Three wellknown simulation models of different structure and variable sets (DNDC, RothC, T&P) and nonparametric regression analysis were used to estimate annual CO2 emission from soil and contributions of constant and sporadic controls. The applied models satisfactorily predict both the rate of annual soil CO2 emission and its seasonal dynamics on arable Chernozems. However, while RothC is suitable for the whole set of crops considered, DNDC is most suitable for cereals and T&R for bare soils only. A comparison of the contributions of permanent and sporadic factors to soil respiration showed that on an inter-annual scale soil temperature and moisture are less important than yearly crop rotation in Chernozem plowlands, making the latter the most important predictor apart from general land-use type. Although the combination of significant permanent and sporadic factors is able to explain 41% of the soil CO2 emission variance, the leading involvement of spatial controls prevents the construction of quantitative regression models that are able to make forecasts, requiring the use of more sophisticated simulation models (i.e. RothC) in this case. However, the use of the latter does not yet solve the problem of predicting soil CO2 emission and its net balance in forest-covered or steppe areas of Chernozem forest-steppe landscape.
