The closed greenhouse is a recent innovation in the horticulture industry. Cooling by ventilation is replaced partly (in semi-closed greenhouses) or completely (in closed greenhouses) by mechanical cooling. Excess solar energy is collected and stored to be reused to heat the greenhouse. In temperate climates, this concept combines improved crop production with energy savings. This paper presents an overview of climate, crop growth and development, and crop yield in closed and semi-closed greenhouses. The technical principles of a closed greenhouse are described and the macroclimate and microclimate arising from this are studied. The consequences of the typical growth conditions found in closed greenhouses for crop physiology and crop yield are examined. Finally, the experiences of commercial growers are presented. In temperate climates, closed greenhouses can reduce the use of fossil fuel-derived energy by 25 -35%, compared with open greenhouses. With high global radiation, the climate in closed greenhouses is characterised by high CO 2 concentrations, high air humidity, improved temperature control, and a vertical temperature gradient. An annual increase in production of 10 -20% is realistic, with reduced amounts of supplied CO 2 . The yield increase is primarily obtained through increased rates of photosynthesis due to the higher CO 2 concentrations in closed greenhouses. To introduce this innovation into practice, knowledge transfer was a key factor for its implementation and the realisation of increased production levels. Future trends will require minimising the use of fossil fuels and increasing the level of control of the production process. Closed and semi-closed greenhouses fit seamlessly into this trend as they allow for a more controlled climate and higher levels of production, combined with savings in fossil fuel use.

Effects of supplemental lighting, semi-closed greenhouse and split-root fertigation on weekly to seasonal heat and electricity use and CO2 emissions in cucumber growing were estimated in Finland. With moderate lighting (170 W m-2 above rows, 60 W m-2 inter-row) in a ventilated greenhouse, seasonal electricity and heat use (MJ kg-1 cucumber) were 20–50 and 10–25, 17–30 and 3–8, 38–55 and 10–18 in spring, summer and autumn to mid-winter, respectively. In summer, a semi-closed greenhouse improved energy use efficiency by 20–30% and split-root fertigation by 0–15%. Raising light intensity and applying inter- row lighting allowed higher yields in autumn to mid-winter without affecting electricity use efficiency. In other seasons, increasing the lighting decreased the efficiency. The emissions largely resulted from electricity use. Direct emissions (kg CO2-eq kg-1) based on propane and electricity from the national grid were 2.5, 1.5 and 3.3 in spring, summer and autumn to mid-winter, respectively. Efficiency of using solar and supplemental PAR was markedly lower in summer than in other seasons. The results provide profile of energy use and emissions and point to ways to reduce them.

Efficient use of energy in greenhouses has been subject of research and development for decades. The final energy efficiency, e.g. the amount of energy used per unit of product, is determined by improvements in energy conversion, reductions in energy use for environmental control and the efficiency of crop production. The new European targets on reduction of CO 2 emission have resulted in a renewed interest in innovative technologies to improve energy efficiency in greenhouses designed for North-as well as South European regions. In this paper an overview of the recent developments is presented from both the Northwest European as well as the Mediterranean perspective. The developments range from new modified covering materials, innovative and energy conservative climate control equipment and plant response based control systems, to integrated energy efficient greenhouse designs.
