Green Synthesis of Full-Color Fluorescent Carbon Nanoparticles from Eucalyptus Twigs for Sensing the Synthetic Food Colorant and Bioimaging

Abstract: Full-color fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) are produced by a facile and green hydrothermal method followed by the differential washing technique. Eucalyptus twigs are used as a precursor to synthesize multiemissive light blue, blue, green, and red CNPs. Brilliant Blue FCF (BB) is a widely used synthetic food colorant, which is toxic for the human body, when consumed beyond the permitted limit. Herein, we demonstrate light blue CNPs as a sensor for selective and sensitive detectio… Show more

“…NCs with cores of heavy metal compounds, such as CdSe, CdTe, and PbS, were initially the most widespread due to their easy synthesis and unique optical properties [ 125 , 126 ]. However, the current trend is to use the nontoxic cadmium-free and lead-free fluorescent NCs made of silicon [ 127 ], carbon [ 128 ], graphene [ 129 ], ZnS [ 130 ], CuInS 2 [ 131 ], AgInS 2 [ 132 ], or InP [ 133 ].…”

“…Nag and co-workers reported the preparation of light-blue CNPs for the detection of Brilliant Blue FCF (BB), a toxic synthetic food colorant. 81 These nanoparticles were obtained from dry Eucalyptus twigs and ammonium chloride as starting materials. Different emissive nanoparticles were obtained after filtration and washing.…”

“…The fluorescence of the carbon NMs was quenched by Fe 3+ ions, which were then recovered by ATP, resulting in the establishment of an on and off detection system. Eucalyptus twig‐based full‐colored fluorescent carbon NMs have been prepared through the biogenic hydrothermal method (Damera et al, 2020). The NMs were successfully used to detect a synthetic food colorant (Brilliant Blue FCF), which if consumed in large quantities causes hazardous effects.…”
