Green space, soundscape and urban sustainability: an interdisciplinary, empirical study

Abstract: This paper addresses two typically separate issues contributing to urban quality of life: increasing noise levels and declining quality of public green space. Drawing from environmental psychology, ecology and acoustical methods, this interdisciplinary research studied the soundscapes of three green spaces in a UK city through interviews with 70 park users, the measurement of habitat and recording of sound levels. The data reveal a prevalence of mechanical sounds and a hierarchy of preference for natural over … Show more

“…Uniquely among the study mangroves, it is valued for the more intrinsic benefits of peace and tranquility, and enjoying time with family. Urban green spaces can attenuate sounds generated outside their area (Irvine et al 2009), and wooded areas can restore a sense of peace, comfort, and mental and spiritual balance (Hansen-Ketchum et al 2011). The proximity of the Pasir Ris Mangrove to residences may allow locals to visit more frequently, and therefore to appreciate the more intrinsic benefits that it can provide.…”

“…To examine the related problems of increasing sound pollution and decreasing urban green space, Irvine et al [63] combine environmental psychology, ecology and acoustical analysis to describe both subjective and objective measures of sound at various places within urban green spaces. Like many MIT projects, when combining multiple disciplinary perspectives, some aspects of one discipline will get appropriated differently than others.…”

“…In a comparative study of three green spaces in Sheffield (United Kingdom), Irvine et al (2009) demonstrate a relationship between the perception of sound and the attributes of the greenery. Park users expressed a hierarchy of preference for sound, valuing natural sounds over those of people or mechanical sounds.…”
