Defining Terms for Integrated (Multi-Inter-Trans-Disciplinary) Sustainability Research

Abstract: Abstract:Our contemporary social and ecological problems, including climate change, peak oil and food security, necessitate solutions informed by multiple backgrounds that singular disciplines seem unable to provide, and possibly, are even incapable of providing. The increasing occurrence of multi-, inter-and transdisciplinary (MIT) research projects speak to the recognition of that necessity. But as the literature and our own experiences bear out, just calling a project "beyond disciplinary" or integrated doe… Show more

As a result, the different members of the team become able to use knowledge and skills from another discipline, while integrating this with the knowledge and skills from their own discipline (Stock & Burton 2011:1098. “…A key component is that it also involves the voices of the recipients of such services. It is therefore not limited to an academic discourse (Stock & Burton 2011:1090. In this regard, South African policies acknowledge the inclusion of recipients by means of the social development approach to community well-being.…”

“…Without a focus on problems or everyday practice, SIA would never be initiated and, instead, monodisciplinary communities of highly specialised experts would remain isolated, unable to work on problems whose solutions transcend disciplinary boundaries. I agree with Kuhn that SIA cannot overcome structural constraints through old or new disciplinary tools unless it has a practice-based focus on solving problems [14][15][16][17].…”

“…At its core, transdisciplinarity is about the creative synthesis of knowledge to address real-world problems through transcending ideological, scientific, religious, economic, political and philosophical boundaries (Shrivastava & Ivanaj, 2011). Ultimately, successful implementation requires teams to establish conditions that diminish disciplinary chauvinism and cognitive biases and favor transparency, selfreflection and willingness to question personal assumptions and beliefs (Stock & Burton, 2011).…”

“…Transdisciplinarity involves a creative synthesis where members of different disciplines transcend boundaries to form a new, integrated, and more holistic approach (Darbellay, 2014;J. T. Klein, 2008b;Rosenfield, 1992;Stock & Burton, 2011). In other words, multidisciplinary is additive, interdisciplinary is interactive, and transdisciplinary is holistic (Choi &Pak, 2006).…”
