Green Solvents Combined with Bioactive Compounds as Delivery Systems: Present Status and Future Trends

Abstract: Green solvents such as ionic liquids (ILs) unlock possibilities for developing innovative biomedical and pharmaceutical solutions. ILs are the most investigated solvents for compound extractions, as reaction media and/or catalysts, and a desired eco-friendly solvent to process biomacromolecules for biomaterial production. Investigations demonstrate that the tunable nature and physicochemical features of ILs are also beneficial for building up delivery systems through their combination with bioactive compounds.… Show more

“…3 Hence, DDSs have grown in importance in the pharmacological industry over the past few decades. [4][5][6] Controlled drug release is one of the methods of drug delivery and an essential topic in biomedical research. 7 In this process, a polymer, ceramic, or metal carrier is combined with a drug or active agent in a designed approach so that an active agent can be released into the human body in a predetermined and desired way.…”

“…The tissues of those plants contain certain ingredients, which make them medicinally active ( Li et al, 2020 , Babich et al, 2020 , Galanakis et al, 2020 ). The ingredients themselves are used as therapeutic agents or as active ingredients in formulations rich in bioactive compounds ( Silva et al, 2021 , de Amorim et al, 2020 ). The substance can also be used as a raw material for the manufacturing of drugs under chemical modification ( Standau et al, 2019 , Schmid et al, 2018 , Singh et al, 2018 ).…”
