Analyzing Sustainability Literature in Maritime Studies with Text Mining

Since the world’s first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, sustainability has become a focal point of significant debate for industry, government, and international organizations. As a result, research on sustainability of maritime logistics is on the rise, yet fragmented in terms of conceptual development, empirical testing and validation, and theory building. The aim of this paper is therefore two-fold: the first aim is to present a literature review of key journal articles in the field of maritime studies published between 1993 and 2017 using a technique of topic modelling; and the second is to provide future research directions with respect to major topics, themes and co-authorship patterns. Mapping and consolidation of sustainability issues are achieved by conducting a generative probabilistic text-mining technique, called latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), for latent data discovery and relationships among text document data. Moreover, bibliometric analysis is conducted to visualize the landscape of sustainability research. Based on the results, a new intellectual structure of sustainability research is created, the underlying themes are identified, key trends and patterns are extracted and future research development trajectories are mapped for the field of maritime studies.

Green Shipping Effect on Sustainable Economy and Environmental Performance

This paper focuses on green shipping and its’ influence on the sustainable economy and environmental performance. Based on the green shipping approach, this empirical study examines a survey sample of 193 responses from Portuguese and Spanish executive managers and uses exploratory factor analysis and structural equation model. The Green shipping approach supports the green theory. The results show the importance of green efficiency, green management, and pollution impact. The confirmation of the sizeable influence of green shipping on the sustainable economy and environmental performance constructs constitutes a major contribution to the literature. Green management and green efficiency contribute to controlling the impact of pollution with practical effects on economic sustainability. Another contribution arises from the fact that tax and financial incentives and environmental sustainability regulations indicate the relevance of the pollution impact and sustainable economy.

En el contexto del transporte marítimo, los clientes pueden desarrollar distintos roles. Objetivo. Analizar la lealtad en las relaciones entre empresas marítimas según el tipo de cliente (importador y agente de carga), observando las prácticas sostenibles y el valorlogístico como variables impulsoras de la lealtad. Metodología. Se analizó una muestra de 105 empresas panameñas de transporte marítimo por medio de la estimación de un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales. Resultados. Se evidencia el papel mediador del valor logístico entre las prácticas sostenibles y la lealtad. Se constata la influencia que posee el tipo de cliente sobre los efectos encadenados hipotetizados. Conclusiones. Se concluye que para los importadores la cadena de efectos se intensifica y que tanto el valor logístico como las prácticas sostenibles son bases en las que apoyar la estrategia de fidelización. Así pues, se dibuja la ruta para el mantenimiento de las relaciones a largo plazo con este tipo de cliente.
