Green Roof Valuation: A Probabilistic Economic Analysis of Environmental Benefits

Abstract: Green (vegetated) roofs have gained global acceptance as a technologythat has the potential to help mitigate the multifaceted, complex environmental problems of urban centers. While policies that encourage green roofs exist atthe local and regional level, installation costs remain at a premium and deter investment in this technology. The objective of this paper is to quantitatively integrate the range of stormwater, energy, and air pollution benefits of green roofs into an economic model that captures the buil… Show more

“…In addition, there are many advantages for the environment, ranging from increasing the thermal insulation of the building envelope and reduction of urban heat island effects [127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135], acting as a buffer for storm water [135][136][137][138][139][140], improving air quality and increased carbon-dioxide uptake [141][142][143], increasing urban biodiversity [144][145][146][147], providing a visually pleasant environment [148], to even crop harvesting. Also from an economical point of view, building greening seems interesting [149][150][151][152].…”

“…These measures have many ecological advantages too, ranging from increasing the thermal insulation of the building envelope and reduction of urban heat island effects [1]- [9], acting as a buffer for storm water [9]- [14], improving air quality and increased carbon dioxide uptake [15]- [17], increasing urban biodiversity [18]- [22], providing a visually pleasant environment [23], to even crop harvesting. In addition, also from an economical point of view, building greening seem interesting [24]- [27]. Recently, the noise reducing possibilities of such building envelope greening measures have been identified [28][29] [30][31] [32].…”

“…Green roofs have been proven to reduce stormwater runoff and help in increase the energy efficiency of buildings, with absorption of close to 70% of the rainfall on buildings, also helping to reduce ground level ozone in urban areas (Clark, Adriaens, & Talbot, 2008 Other studies have focused on specific types of GI. For instance Shammaa, Zhuet et al worked to retrofit and enhance the existing dry detention ponds to remove the total suspended solids (TSS) from stormwater.…”
