Green Light for Nocturnally Migrating Birds

Abstract: The nighttime sky is increasingly illuminated by artificial light sources. Although this ecological light pollution is damaging ecosystems throughout the world, the topic has received relatively little attention. Many nocturnally migrating birds die or lose a large amount of their energy reserves during migration as a result of encountering artificial light sources. This happens, for instance, in the North Sea, where large numbers of nocturnally migrating birds are attracted to the many offshore platforms. Our… Show more

“…fewer nocturnally migrating passerines were affected by shorter wavelengths, i.e. green and blue light, relative to white light or light with longer wavelengths; Poot et al 2008). Given the results of our study and previous fallout research, studies further investigating the effects of light wavelength and/or intensity on fallout may be an important next step in the conservation of these birds.…”

“…The built environment should be designed to minimize light pollution including: light trespass, over-illumination, glare, light clutter, and skyglow while using bird-friendly lighting colors when possible (Poot et al 2008 LEFT: The white streaks are the time-exposed paths of birds attracted to, dazed by, and circling within the columns of light. Many succumbed to exhaustion and perished without completing their migration.…”

“…ALAN can affect several behaviors of wild animals, from orientation and navigation during dispersal and migration (Rich and Longcore, 2006;Poot et al, 2008), to daily and seasonal rhythms in behavior Robert et al, 2015;Dominoni et al, 2016), to more subtle physiological effects on stress levels, body mass and immune responses (Bedrosian et al, 2011;Ouyang et al, 2015;Raap et al, 2016a). Effects on circadian rhythms of behavior and physiology are particularly evident in a range of species, from insects to mammals (Swaddle et al, 2015).…”
