Green fabrication of a positively charged nanofiltration membrane by grafting poly(ethylene imine) onto a poly (arylene ether sulfone) membrane containing tertiary amine groups

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA green method to prepare asymmetric positively charged poly(arylene ether sulfone) nanofiltration (NF) membranes was explored by grafting water-soluble poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) onto a poly (arylene ether sulfone) membrane containing tertiary amine groups (PES-TA) and cross-linking with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE). The modifications were shown to increase the positive charge and decrease the pore size of the PES-TA substrate. The optimized NF membrane displayed a pure wate… Show more

“…During the NF process, the surface charges can dramatically influence the membrane performance due to the Donnan effects . Therefore, the surface ζ-potentials of the TA/GOQDs TFN membranes prepared at different concentrations of GOQDs in the aqueous phase were detected under pH 7.0, and the results are shown in Figure .…”

“…The preparation methods of NF membrane mainly include phase inversion [ 10 , 11 ], interfacial polymerization [ 12 ], grafting [ 13 ] and film deposition on a preformed substrate [ 14 ]. Most of the methods prepare membranes with negatively charged surface.…”

“…Moreover, a sustainable development can only be realized when it satisfies the current needs without undermining the ability of next generations to meet their own needs. Ideally, a process should comply with green principles [6], such as effective waste prevention, better atom economy, replacement of hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives, and higher energy efficiency. [10], (B) TIPS (reprinted with permission from) [11], and (C) VIPS and EIPS (reprinted with permission from) [12].…”
