Green Development Performance Evaluation Based on Dual Perspectives of Level and Efficiency: A Case Study of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Abstract: In the context of continuing to promote the construction of an ecological civilization, it is of great significance to explore green development performance. However, most of the literature is based on a single perspective of level or efficiency, lacking a comprehensive examination of both. It is not scientific to explore how to promote green development only from a single perspective, which may be a new advancement by breaking the conventional thinking focusing only on level or efficiency. On this basis, we f… Show more

“…(1) In the target layer, the weight of environmental protection and utilization dimension was 0.48, greater than the dimension of economic green development with a weight of 0.26. This result is different from the existing research done by Zhang et al (2022) who gave greater weight to the economic indicators and prioritized the per-capita GDP growth rate. This is because they selected cities in the YREB as the research objects, which mainly pursue economic development.…”

“…protection, quality of growth and sustainable living. In academia, researchers have been focusing on a five-dimensional evaluation system of green development based on DPSIR framework (Zhang et al 2020) and a six-dimensional evaluation system used to measure the quality of growth, industrial development, resource utilization, environmental carrying capacity, environmental management and sustainable living (Zhang et al 2022). Also, several three-dimensional evaluation systems are widely studied, such as the Economic Development-Social Progress-Ecological Civilization system (Huang and Li 2017), the Green Growth-Green Welfare-Green Wealth system (Li et al 2020) The method for evaluating GDPL include subjective weighting methods (expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process), objective weighting methods (entropy weighting method and TOPSIS method, projection pursuit model, time series and principal component analysis, factor analysis) and the comprehensive weighting method (Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio method, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, the hesitant Fermatean fuzzy MULTIMOORA approach) (Abdelgawad and Fayek 2010;Brauers and Zavadskas 2010;Li et al2014;Huang and Li 2017;Luo and Liu 2022).…”

“…Between 2012 and 2018, the GDE of the YREB city clusters all received a significant boost. Some studies suggest that this phenomenon is related to the macro policies of the Chinese government (Li G et al, 2021;Li J et al, 2021;Zhang et al, 2022). Our regression results also support the idea that PI is positively correlated with GDE.…”

“…This paper also empirically analyses how economic growth affects green finance in China from a broad and narrow perspective (Qiu, 2017). The development of national green credit, green stocks, green bonds, green investment and green GDP is measured based on various financial indicators of environmental protection companies, and the development level and efficiency of national, inter-provincial and regional green finance are subsequently analyzed (Zhang et al, 2018). By using a green financial development index system built based on China's highspeed and new normal economic development stages, this paper reveals a high green development level in Central China and suggests that the entire country should learn from the green financial development policy of this region (Zhou and Tian, 2019).…”
