Gravity Models of Internal Migration – the Czech Case Study

Abstract: In this paper, the models of internal migration flows between regions (NUTS 3) in the Czech Republic in time series from 1991 to 2012 are tested. The paper aims to find out how size, distance and economic variables explain migration flows between Czech regions. Several versions of an extended gravity model were used for testing, where economic factors which are frequently mentioned in literature on migration were used as regressors (i.e. average wage, registered unemployment rate, job vacancies and job vacanci… Show more

“…The gravity model is valid for the relationship of the Czech Republic and EU member countries. Our findings support the previous literature on international trade and gravity in the Czech Republic (Akhvlediani and Śledziewska, 2016;Babuněk, 2012;Paulus and Michalíková, 2014;Jandová and Paleta, 2015).…”

“…The gravity model has also been used by several researchers adjusting it to analyze different phenomena in the Czech Republic. Jandová and Paleta (2015) analyzed the link between size, distance, and economic variables and internal migration flow within the Czech Republic. The researchers employed several versions of an extended gravity model, using wage, unemployment, and job vacancies as repressors and the internal migration flow as the dependent variable.…”

“…He finds that migration and trade from the Southern region to the European Union are positively and significantly correlated. Jandová and Paleta (2015) for the Czech region find that the economic variables—such as average wage, registered unemployment rate and job vacancies for internal migration—give slightly improved results than the pure gravity model. They further highlight that the economic variables in the ratio form have better explanatory power than their representation in differences and values.…”

“…Thus, the empirical results from national analyses only contributed to the verification of migration theories, and to identifying potential differences between (inter)national determinants of migration, so as to become the groundwork for regional economic policies (Jandová & Paleta, 2015). Nevertheless, according to the 'push and pull' general theory of migration, immigration is determined by a summarized comparison of a wide range of positive factors in destination countries and various negative ones in the original place of residence (Rahmandoust, 2011).…”
