Grating-Type Soft-Focus Filter for Improving Picture Quality of Liquid Crystal Displays

Abstract: The temporal evolution of disorder around grain boundaries between domains of ideally six-fold coordinated two-dimensional foam has been studied experimentally, using a foam comprising bubbles bridging between a soap solution and a cover glass. The disorder, quantified by the second central moment of the distribution of topological classes of the cells (µ 2 ), generally increases. In certain cases, in which the evolution can be followed over longer times, µ 2 eventually falls. This may be connected with the tr… Show more

“…3,4 Liquid crystals ͑LCs͒ constitute a novel type of functionalized materials possessing exciting physical and chemical properties, 5 potentially leading to important technological applications such as polarization-sensitive optical devices. The molecules are selectively photoreacted only at the surface of the film under the polarization holographic illumination, and the resultant photocrosslinked mesogenic molecules induce the three-dimensional twisted gratings in the film during annealing process.…”

“…Diffractive optical devices are of great importance for realizing numerical optical functions such as optical memory devices, 1) integrated optical devices, 2) and thin-film optical filters. 3,4) It is possible to fabricate diffractive optical devices by exposing light-sensitive materials such as photopolymers to interference light. The resulting gratings can control the light propagation direction and can be used in optoelectronic equipments.…”

If, instead of isotropic media such as glassy or polymeric materials, the nematic LC is used as the gratings, then the possibility of obtaining multifunctionalized optical devices arises.…”
