Graphitic Dots Combining Photophysical Characteristics of Organic Molecular Fluorophores and Inorganic Quantum Dots

Abstract: Thanks to their photophysical properties, both organic molecular fluorophores (MFs) and inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are extensively used for bioimaging applications. However, limitations such as photobleaching for the former or blinking, size, and toxicity for the latter still constitute a challenge for numerous applications. We report here that embedding MFs in graphitic carbon dots (GDs) results in fluorophores which entirely tackle this challenge. Characterized by ultranarrow, bright, and excitation-indepe… Show more

“…Although CDs have already permeated many different fields, it is apparent that any application will encounter the challenge of expanding knowledge on the structure-activity relationship of CDs. Further development in controlled synthesis, along with development of innovative methods, 172 will surely lead to rapid progression and new unforeseen applications. There is great scope and potential for absolute control over function and application in bottom-up approach.…”

“…Indeed, a protective effect of the carbon core against PB effects was already proposed in previous studies of the PB of specific blue-emitting fluorophores. 67 , 68 Anyway, the present FLIP experiments provide an efficient way to discriminate apparently identical CDs with respect to their photostability, which is an important functional property and is essential for viability in practical applications.…”

“…Solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were purchased from Sigma Aldrich (Burlington, MA, USA) and used without any further purification. The GDs were prepared using the method reported in [ 26 , 27 ].…”
