Graph-Based Indexing and Retrieval of Lifelog Data

Abstract: Understanding the relationship between objects in an image is an important challenge because it can help to describe actions in the image. In this paper, a graphical data structure, named "Scene Graph", is utilized to represent an encoded informative visual relationship graph for an image, which we suggest has a wide range of potential applications. This scene graph is applied and tested in the popular domain of lifelogs, and specifically in the challenge of known-item retrieval from lifelogs. In this work, ev… Show more

“…With our state-of-the-art result in the text-to-image retrieval section, it opens a wide range of applications of our structure in the field of finding images that are relevant to the given description. For instance, one potential application is in lifelogging retrieval, where a graph-based method has shown its promising performance [14].…”

“…The introduction of a scene graph structure [10] introduces a promising way to address this issue. Due to its capacity to capture both objects and their interactions, the design has been applied and achieved excellent results in various fields [11,12,13,14]. A scene graph structure is a graph including nodes and edges connecting nodes together.…”

“…Another VR-based system, called VIRMA [7], created a hierarchy structure of visual concepts that supports users to explore the lifelog data rather than retrieval. Some systems applied the graph structure to lifelog dataset [24,27]. Lifegraph [28] used the knowledge graph to enhance the annotated information.…”

“…This idea was adopted by almost the half of the participants in the LSC'20 [17,20,26,27,39]. On the other hand, SOMHunter [27] which was the runner-up system of the competition and Exquisitor [17] heavily relied on user's relevance feedback, while LifeGraph [33] explored the potential of indexing the lifelog into a graph structure [30].…”
