This paper presents the spatial distribution of liquid and solid (suspended load) discharge in the Ivaí River Basin, and its implication in the functioning of this river system. The Ivaí is a typical medium-size river of the basaltic plateau, on the left side of the Paraná River Basin in southern Brazil. The data relating to water discharge and concentration of suspended sediment come from 19 gauging stations controlled by the former Superintendence of Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation Development-SUDERHSA, today Water Institute of Paraná. The river drains an area of 36,587 km 2 , and its average discharge during the study period (1974-2008) was 702.9 m 3 s-1. The specifi c discharge (Qsp = Qm:Ab) varied uniformly between 0.01 and 0.02 m 3 s-1 km-2 , however, an anomalous result of 0.11 m 3 s-1 km-2 was identifi ed. Effect of Digital Elevation Model Mesh Size on Geomorphic Indices: A Case Study of the Ivaí River Watershed - State of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract:Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative description of land surface morphology by the mean of geomorphic indices extracted from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The analysis of these indices is the first and most common procedure performed in several geoscience-related subjects. This study aims to assess the impact of mesh size degradation on different local and regional geomorphic indices extracted for GDEM and TOPODATA DEMs. Thus, these DEMs, having a mesh size of 30 m, were subsampled to 60, 120 and 240 m and then geomorphic indices were calculated using the full resolution DEM and the subsampled ones. Depending on their behavior, these indices are then classified into stable and unstable. The results show that the most affected indices are slope and hydrographic indices such as Strahler order, stream sinuosity and fractal dimension and watershed perimeter, whereas elevation remains stable. It also shows that the effect depends on the presence of the canopy and geological structures in the studied area.Keywords: Geomorphic indices; Digital Elevation Model; Mesh Size; Scale. RESUMOEsse estudo apresenta uma análise do comportamento da carga sedimentar fundo, assim como oscilações na forma dos perfis transversais dos principais canais que compõe o trecho inferior da bacia do alto rio Branco. A metodologia envolveu o levantamento da morfologia do canal por batimetria, a amostragem e classificação de materiais de fundo. Os resultados evidenciaram oscilações na morfologia dos perfis transversais com destaque o perfil da Fazenda Paraíso, no rio Tacutu, com erosão de 263,88 m 2 e no perfil Ilha São Lourenço, no rio Branco, que apresentaram deposição de 359,07 m 2 . O levantamento dos materiais de fundo indicou a predominância de sedimentos tamanho areia grossa no baixo curso dos rios Tacutu e Uraricoera. No canal do alto rio Branco apresentou materiais formados principalmente por areia média, seguido por areia grossa. Quanto ao grau de seleção de sedimentos, o monitoramento apontou para uma ordenação dos materiais de fundo de acordo com a posição em relação ao talvegue.Palavras-chave: Carga sedimentar de fundo, perfil transversal, bacia do alto rio Branco. ABSTRACTThis study presents an analysis of the sedimentary bed load behavior as well as oscillations in the form of cross sections of the main channels that make up the lower stretch of the Branco river upper basin. The methodology involved the lifting of the channel morphology, the sampling and classification of bed load. The results showed variations in the morphology of cross sections highlighting the profile of Paraíso Farm on the River Tacutu, with erosion of 263.88 m 2 , and profile Island São Lourenço, in the Branco River, which showed deposition of 359.07 m 2 . The survey of bed load indicated the predominance of coarse sand size sediments in the lower course of the Tacutu and Uraricoera rivers. The high Branco river channel presented materials formed mainly by medium sand, followed by coarse sand. The degree of sediment selection, monitoring pointed to a sort of bed load according to the position in relation to the thalweg.
