Granuloma Faciale: Comparison of Different Treatment Modalities

Abstract: Granuloma faciale is an uncommon cutaneous condition characterized by brownish-red macules, papules, nodules, and plaques. Separate areas of granuloma faciale involving the nasal skin of a 32-year-old man were treated using electrosurgery, carbon dioxide laser, and dermabrasion. All modalities provided good cosmetic and functional outcomes. The relative advantages and disadvantages of each technique are presented.

“…Dermabrasion, argon and CO 2 lasers, electrosurgery, and cryotherapy have all been used with some success. [17][18][19] In addition, dapsone, clofazimine, antimalarials, topical or intralesional or systemic corticosteriods, and topical psoralen with ultraviolet A have each been used in the treatment of individual cases. 1,[20][21][22][23][24] The combination of cryotherapy and intralesional corticosteroid injection almost completely cleared the lesions in 9 patients.…”

“…Other investigators, however, were unable to reproduce their results. In a sideby-side comparison of electrosurgery, carbon dioxide laser, and dermabrasion, Dinehart et al 28 noted a recurrence in all 3 sites at 1 year. Also, the argon laser was thought to be a promising treatment for granuloma faciale.…”
