This article, the second of two, argues that conceptualizing the socioecological fix involves understanding how fixed capital, as a produced production force, can transform the socioecological conditions and forces of production while also securing the hegemony of particular social hierarchies, power relations, and institutions. We stress that fixed capital is inherently political ecological in its constitution and how it shapes socioecological processes of landscape transformation. Fixed capital necessarily congeals socioecological materials and processes and can be understood as a produced form of nature tied to the circulation of value and the deployment of social labor. Fixed capital is therefore inherently metabolic and internalizes and transforms socioecologies. We also discuss the fixing of capital within socioecological landscapes as processes involving both the formal and real subsumption of nature. We emphasize the dual role of fixed capital formation in shaping the socioecological conditions and forces of production and, more broadly, of everyday life. Thus, we argue, fixed capital formation as a metabolic process cannot be fully conceptualized in narrowly economic terms. We turn to Gramsci and some recent work in political ecology to argue that socioecological fixes need to be understood in ideological terms, and specifically in the establishment and contestation of hegemony.

This study aims to explain the forms of power experienced by peripheral characters in the Pasung Jiwa novel by Okky Madasari. In addition, this study also explains the strategies carried out by these three peripheral characters to fight systemic power in the midst of society. In terms of analyzing existing problems, this research uses the theory of Hegemony from Antonio Gramsci through descriptive qualitative methods using the sociology of literary works, namely using forms of power that have been developed on the three characters in the story. The results showed the difference between humans in getting freedom in the period before and after the reform. This novel shows the existence of hegemony that occurs in several peripheral characters in the story, namely Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis. In the process of searching for identity, the three of them found what was done by the family, even in religious organizations. These forms of hegemony also dominate their bodies and minds. Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis are aware that its domination does not only occur in themselves, but also in the whole society. Therefore, these three characters choose to fight the hegemony that experienced in themselves with the struggle to make themselves free from the systemic power, both from the confinement family, the norms that exist in society, work, and also the doctrines of religion that have already dominated Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis.

The topic thus demands a historicist methodology that involves grappling with the concrete histories in which unemployment occurs and gains social and political meaning (see Buttigieg 1990; Morton 2007; Thomas 2009). In what follows, I ground my theoretical arguments in the particular histories of unemployment and relief work in Depression‐era BC, considering what this history means for our understanding of joblessness.…”

In this article, I examine this nexus between the social and political meaning of unemployment and the political responses that follow. I focus on Depression-era Vancouver and investigate the broad ideologies, representations and practices that contributed to the derision of the unemployed, which in turn, informed the establishment of rural relief camps that aimed to address the unemployment crisis of the 1930s. The social and political meaning of unemployment shaped the contours of the Federal Unemployment Relief Scheme, which housed men in work camps and aimed to both discipline and rehabilitate the unemployed. However, the relief camps were plagued by several contradictions exploited by the Relief Camp Workers Union, which constructed oppositional understandings of unemployment. In discussing the relationship between unemployment and relief I attend to questions of space, highlighting the urbanisation of unemployment and the ideological distinctions between the city and the country.
