Grain size control on Sr‐Nd isotope provenance studies and impact on paleoclimate reconstructions: An example from deep‐sea sediments offshore NW Africa

Abstract: [1] Five sediment cores from offshore NW Africa were analyzed for strontium and neodymium isotope ratios to reconstruct temporal variations in continental weathering regimes. Sediments were taken from three time slices with well-known and distinctive environmental conditions: present-day (dry and warm), ∼6 ka (wet and warm), and ∼12 ka (dry and cold). Terrigenous sediment samples were split into two size fractions to distinguish between the two dominant transport mechanisms offshore NW Africa: fluvial (0-10 mm… Show more

“…Radiogenic isotopes (Sr, Nd, Pb) are likewise powerful tracers for identifying and characterizing source areas of terrigenous material, which may in turn give us additional information about the provenance and transport mechanisms (e.g., Grousset et al, , 1992Grousset et al, , 1998Revel et al, 1996;Tütken et al, 2002;Grousset and Biscaye, 2005;Jullien et al, 2007;Cole et al, 2009;Box et al, 2011;Meyer et al, 2011;Stumpf et al, 2011;Scheuvens et al, 2013).…”

“…Sr and Nd isotope signatures of terrigenous components in marine sediments provide a useful tool to assess sediment sources and transport mechanisms (Bayon et al, 2003;Grousset and Biscaye, 2005;Weldeab et al, 2002aWeldeab et al, , b, 2011Meyer et al, 2011). We established a low-resolution time series of Sr and Nd isotopes in core GeoB8332-4.…”
