Grafting of iPP powder with methacrylate monomers in water medium

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The grafting of different methacrylates on iPP in the solid state has been studied under various reaction conditions using a radical initiation. Three peroxides and five grafting agents representing methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, ethyl hexyl-, and dodecyl methacrylate were tested. The grafting efficiency (GE) performed in water medium (slurry) as possible heat transfer medium was compared with the GE obtained without using water. The iPP powder was first impregnated with monomer and peroxide initiator and t… Show more

“…Polyolefins are nonpolar by nature which leads to excellent chemical resistance but poor compatibility with polar molecules. When functionalized with polar moieties 1−15 such as hydroxyl groups, 2,3 itaconates, 4 methacrylate esters, 4,5 and maleic anhydride, 6−12 the modified polyolefins are useful as compatibilizers in blends, 16−18 composites, 19,20 and nanocomposites. 21−23 Commercial, functionalized polyolefins are based on covalent addition of functional monomers to polyolefins in the presence of a radical initiator; the major categories of this type of functionalization are discussed in detail in a recent publication.…”

“…Polyolefins are nonpolar by nature which leads to excellent chemical resistance but poor compatibility with polar molecules. When functionalized with polar moieties such as hydroxyl groups, , itaconates, methacrylate esters, , and maleic anhydride, the modified polyolefins are useful as compatibilizers in blends, composites, , and nanocomposites. Commercial, functionalized polyolefins are based on covalent addition of functional monomers to polyolefins in the presence of a radical initiator; the major categories of this type of functionalization are discussed in detail in a recent publication . The most common method used for functionalization is melt extrusion; under the high temperature ( T ) conditions utilized, functionalization is usually accompanied by undesirable side effects, including chain scission, branching, and cross-linking. For this reason, there is ongoing interest to develop improved, commercially scalable methods for postpolymerization functionalization of polyolefins in the presence of both a radical initiator, such as an organic peroxide, and a functional monomer …”

“…In general, the total reaction time for grafting polymerization is about at least four times the half-life of the initiator at the reaction temperature[42,43]. Since the half-life of BPO at 90 °C is 1 h, required reaction time for BPO grafting reaction should be 4 h. However, for a chemical process, it is helpful to reduce the reaction time to reduce cost and maximize profit.…”

“…Then the FTIR absorption spectra of the purified samples were tested. Besides, to identify the characteristic peaks of grafted PP, pure PP without any modification is also prepared into a film sample and the FTIR is tested [13].…”
