Graft copolymerization of glycidylmethacrylate onto modified nylon‐6 fibers

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The graft copolymerization of glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) onto modified nylon-6 fibers containing polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) groups in the presence of (Cu 2ϩ -K 2 S 2 O 8 ) as a redox initiating system was carried out, with very high extent and almost without homopolymer formation. The mechanism of the graft polymerization induced by this system was suggested. The rate of grafting was determined by varying the monomer, K 2 S 2 O 8 , and cupric ion concentrations as well as the amoun… Show more

“…The grafting polymerization is a well known method to modify the chemical and physical structure of polymers, and to consequently expanding their application. Several studies have appeared dealing with grafting vinyl monomers onto polymers 1–5. Many ways were developed to prepare grafting copolymer, such as high energy (gamma ray, electron beam),6, 7 plasma treatment,8 ultraviolet light (UV),9, 10 chemical initiators (including grafting polymerization in solution and in melt)11–13 and oxidation of polymer.…”

“…13 Stemming from this, a simple method for creation of such groups in nylon-6 macromolecule was adopted. 11 In previous investigations, [14][15][16] the reliability of applying polyamide fibers containing QAG, rather than the application of pure ones, for grafting with methacrylic acid, 14 acrylamide, 14 2,2 dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate 15 and glycidyl-methacrylate, 16 was verified.…”

“…The mechanism of such incorporation is believed to be grafting by vinyl addition to polyamide radicals formed during the polymerization process, and is similar to that indicated in a pervious paper. 16 Given below are the different factors that affect the graft add-on. Figure 1 and Table I show the effect of incorporation of various concentrations of copper sulfate on the extent and rate of grafting.…”

“…One distinct advantage to using the Cu 2+ ion is the control of homopolymer formation, and this effect has also been observed when grafting acrylonitrile (AN) onto nylon [95] . Similarly, modifi ed nylon6 fi ber containing grafted polydiallyldimethyl ammonium chloride has been graft polymerized using GMA in the presence of K 2 S 2 O 8 − Cu 2+ as a redox initiating system [96] . The modifi ed nylon6 samples are treated with K 2 S 2 O 8 solution fi rst, washed and dried, and then immersed in aqueous solution of GMA and copper sulfate.…”
