Graft copolymerization of 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid onto carboxymethylcellulose (sodium salt) by H2O2/Fe+2 redox pair

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The effect of the reaction conditions on the grafting parameters during grafting of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid onto sodium carboxymethylcellulose using H 2 O 2 /Fe ϩ2 redox pair are studied at 30°C. The grafting ratio, add on, and conversion initially increase with the H 2 O 2 concentration in the range of (10.0 -15.0) ϫ 10 Ϫ2 mol dm Ϫ3 . Thereafter, these parameters decrease with the H 2 O 2 concentration. The grafting ratio, add on, and conversion increase when increasing the ferro… Show more

“…The initial increment in the grafting level with the reaction period increasing might be due to the increase in the number of active sites16 and the increase in the extension of initiation and propagation with time 12. However, the retardation of diffusion after some polymer formed on the fiber surface and the decrease in the monomer and initiator with increasing time were the reasons for the reduction of the grafting percentage and grafting efficiency 17, 18. The reduction also may have been due to the degradation of the grafted chain on the fiber 19.…”

“…The new characteristic peak at 628 cm ‐1 was assigned to the stretching vibration of S–O of AMPS . The peaks between 863 and 770 cm ‐1 region are attributed to out of plane N–H wagging vibration …”

“…(a), (b) that when increasing AMPS dose, gel content was gradually increased and reached a maximum. This was due to an increase of monomer concentration in the vicinity of the CMC backbone, and as a consequence greater availability and enhancement chances for molecular collisions of reactants . However, when the AMPS dose reached 35 g, gel content decreased.…”
