GPS and Map matching based vehicle accident detection system

Abstract: GPS (Global Positioning System) has become an integral part of a vehicle system which provides speed, time, direction etc besides the navigation data. Speed is one of the primary attributes of vehicle accident. Many lives could have been saved if emergency service could receive accident information timely. This paper proposes to detect an accident from the map matched position of a vehicle by utilizing the GPS speed data and map matching algorithm and send accident location to an Alert Service Center. The GPS … Show more

“…Foursquare enrolls the user directly to produce advertisements through "checking-in" and posting the respective business to their social networks; Twitter, in contrast, appears to the users and their social networks in a way similar to a webpage where users share and discuss contents. 7 Both types of application increase through their mobile interactivity and, by providing the opportunity for users to generate content, the chance that users find a location more memorable [199]. But even when interaction is limited, as, e.g., when reading news, users are found to prefer the mobile phone interaction [173], although one might intuitively expect a paper newspaper to offer better readability.…”

“…Ubiquitous computing hardware allows the instrumentation and augmentation of everyday devices with IoT technologies so as to provide accident information. A typical project example is the car accident detection and assessment device proposed by Amin et al [7]. The device notes the speed when the accident occurred together with the location of the vehicle.…”

“…GPS works as a vibrant piece of the automobile that gives how far the vehicle is moving, at what time and how close it is to its destination. This system helps to identify an accident from the location of the automobile by using GPS speed information and corresponding maps algorithms and send out the accident site to an Alert Service Center [3,7]. The position information will be utilized in the corresponding map algorithms to find out the automobile position.…”

“…GPS can provide excellent navigation with low update rate where the satellite signals are not obstructed [4]. However, the performance severely diminishes or even complete outage occurs in tunnels, urban areas with skyscrapers or in underground parking garages [5]. On the other hand, the INS can provide continuous navigation information with high data rate which does not depend on any external sources like the satellites of the GPS.…”
