Gossypol Toxicosis in a Dog Consequent to Ingestion of Cottonseed Bedding

Abstract: Abstract. Six dogs died after accidental ingestion of cottonseed bedding. No clinical signs of illness were observed prior to death. A full diagnostic workup was performed on one of these dogs. At necropsy, the lungs were congested and edematous, and the liver was firm, congested, and had a marked reticular pattern. There was also moderate ascites. Histopathologic examination revealed multifocal myocardial degeneration and necrosis, severe pulmonary edema, and chronic passive congestion of the lungs, heart, li… Show more

“…However, there are cumulative effects of dietary gossypol and toxicity which can occur following an ingestion period of one to three months [1, 78–81]. Gossypol poisoning has been reported in many species, including broiler chicks [82], pigs [71], dogs [83, 84], sheep [85], and goats [86]. Monogastric animals, such as pigs, birds, fish, and rodents, are more susceptible to gossypol toxicity than ruminants [5, 6, 20, 87].…”

“…The toxicity of gossypol is linked to two aldehyde groups in the molecule [60,[112][113][114][115][116][117]. Transformation of gossypol into its Schiff bases is a convenient way to obtain a group of derivatives with lower toxicity [9,118,119] and still interesting biological as well as physico-chemical properties.…”
