“…Mothers might have interacted more and/or differently if they had held their infants. However, this seems unlikely, since infants were held in a study by Dubignon and Cooper (1980) and similar results to those presented here were reported. The independence of maternal interactions and feeding behavior was further supported by the lack of correlation between feeding and maternal variables.…”

“…At 2 months inefficient sucking was defined as duration of the initial sucking burst less than 60 seconds and less than 80% of time spent in sucking in the first 4 minutes. These cut-off points were based on studies by Dubignon and Cooper (1980), Lucas and colleagues (1981), and a pilot study by Ramsay and Gisel (1996). Borderline sucking was defined by the presence of only one of the above two conditions.…”

“…Biological markers of sucking, such as frequency, amplitude, and duration have been identified in neonates by several researchers (Dubignon andCooper 1980, Rybski andGisel 1984). However such markers are not yet available for identifying inefficient feeding caused by poor appetite and food texture intolerance, although oral-motor dysfunction in children with NFTT has been identified by Reilly and coworkers (1999).…”

“…The nipple used by Dubignon and Campbell (1 969) measures positive as well as negative pressures, via a small balloon in its tip. T h e relationship between sucking and Auid delivery can be altered by the experimenter; in Dubignon and Cooper (1980), for example, fluid is delivered only on every tenth response.…”
