Gonadal development in the freshwater crab Sylviocarcinus pictus (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) (Brachyura: Trichodactylidae) from the Guamá river, state of Pará, Brazil

Abstract: The development stages of male and female gonads in the freshwater crab Sylviocarcinus pictus (H. Milne Eduards, 1853) were described through macroscopic and microscopic (histology) examinations. The histological description was based on 40 specimens (20 each sex). Four gonadal development stages were found for females: immature, ripening, mature and spawned. The following female cells were found: ovogonia, oocytes in initial vitellogenesis, oocytes in advanced vitellogenesis, follicular cells and post-ovulato… Show more

“…The organs were removed from the saline, lightly blotted on paper towels, and weighed wet on an electronic balance. The female reproductive stages (previtellogenic, vitellogenic I, II, and III), were identified (Ding et al, ; Silva et al, ) and the molt stages were observed using setal development in the mastigobranch of third maxillipede (Reddy et al, ).…”

“…Size at sexual maturity is the most important parameters in studying the life history of an organism (Abrams & Rowe, 1996). The gonads of crabs are in the cephalothorax above hepatopancreas (Silva et al, 2012). The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes, a pair of vas deferens and two pairs of gonopods (Erkan et al, 2009) and the female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, ovarian ducts and a pair of spermathecae (Silva et al, 2012).…”
