Here, we report trading of endangered shark species in a world hotspot for elasmobranch conservation in Brazil. Data on shark fisheries are scarce in Brazil, although the northern and northeastern regions have the highest indices of shark bycatch. Harvest is made primarily with processed carcasses lacking head and fins, which hampers reliable species identification and law enforcement on illegal catches. We used partial sequences of two mitochondrial genes (COI and/or NADH2) to identify 17 shark species from 427 samples being harvested and marketed on the northern coast of Brazil. Nine species (53%) are listed under some extinction threat category according to Brazilian law and international authorities (IUCN – International Union for Conservation of Nature; CITES – Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). The number increases to 13 (76%) if we also consider the Near Threatened category. Hammerhead sharks are under threat worldwide, and composed 18.7% of samples, with Sphyrna mokarran being the fourth most common species among samples. As illegal trade of threatened shark species is a worldwide conservation problem, molecular identification of processed meat or specimens lacking diagnostic body parts is a highly effective tool for species identification and law enforcement.

Increasing fishing effort has caused declines in shark populations worldwide. Understanding biological and ecological characteristics of sharks is essential to effectively implement management measures, but to fully understand drivers of fishing pressure social factors must be considered through multidisciplinary and integrated approaches. The present study aimed to use fisher and trader knowledge to describe the shark catch and product supply chain in Northeastern Brazil, and evaluate perceptions regarding the regional conservation status of shark species. Non-systematic observations and structured individual interviews were conducted with experienced fishers and traders. The demand and economic value of shark fins has reportedly decreased over the last 10 years while the shark meat trade has increased slightly, including a small increase in the average price per kilogram of meat. Several threatened shark species were reportedly often captured off shore and traded at local markets. This reported and observed harvest breaches current Brazilian environmental laws. Fishing communities are aware of population declines of several shark species, but rarely take action to avoid capture of sharks. The continuing capture of sharks is mainly due to a lack of knowledge of environmental laws, lack of enforcement by responsible authorities, and difficulties encountered by fishers in finding alternative income streams. National and regional conservation measures are immediately required to reduce overfishing on shark populations in Northeastern Brazil. Social and economic improvements for poor fishing communities must also be implemented to achieve sustainable fisheries.

Sawfishes are the most endangered cartilaginous fishes on the planet. Their external morphology facilitates entanglement in fishing nets and their K-selected life history hinders the recovery of exploited populations. The Eastern Amazon coast (EAC) is known to be an area where sawfishes occur in Brazil, but few studies have been conducted in the area to better understand their biology and ecology. The present study reports sawfish captures along the coast of Brazil's second largest state. Data were collected from interviews with fishermen, a literature review, and media reports. In total, 23 captures were recorded between 1984 and 2016. Records include adults, a pregnant female with near-term embryos, juveniles, and young-of-the-year specimens. Most catches were reported in the Canal do Navio, an area under strong human pressure. Sawfish saws are valuable items and, for many anglers in precarious economic and social situations, high market prices eclipse the fishing prohibitions laid down under federal laws. Urgent research is required to understand sawfishes' life history, identify their critical habitats, and effectively manage and conserve these species along the EAC.

We examined 308 specimens of the Indo-Pacific blenniid Omobranchus punctatus deposited in four museum collections, and analyzed data on their collection locations to assess its invasion on the Atlantic coast of Central and South America. This species occurs in shoreline estuarine and marine habitats in the Indo-West Pacific. Previous sampling and recent records in the Tropical West Atlantic from 1930 to 2004 produced 20 records for: Panamá, Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Brazil. In this work, we provide data on 17 new records for the Gulfs of Venezuela and Paria in Venezuela, as well as four records for Maranhão and Pará states in NE Brazil. The temporal pattern of collections (1930 -2009) and the proximity of most localities to ports and zones of ship traffic indicate that O. punctatus was initially introduced to the Atlantic by ships travelling from India to Trinidad. Within Brazil the introduction is linked to shipping connected to petroleum platforms. In Maranhão and Pará the introduction may have occurred as a result of fish sheltering in fouling on hulls of ships moving between ports around the mouth of the Amazon River. Alternatively, the spread of this species along of the American coast may reflect the expansion of the range of O. puntactus through larval dispersal in northward flowing currents. We recommend monitoring of this introduced species, and studies of its ecology in West Atlantic areas.Nós examinamos 308 espécimes do blenídeo Omobranchus punctatus, de origem Indo-Pacífica, depositados em coleções de quatro museus. Os dados de distribuição foram analisados com o objetivo de avaliar a invasão das águas costeiras do Oceano Atlântico nas Américas do Sul e Central. Em sua área de distribuição original, O. punctatus ocorre em ambientes marinhos e estuarinos. Amostragens datadas de 1930 e de 2004 produziram 20 registros da espécie no Atlântico Oeste tropical, incluindo amostras do Panamá, Colômbia, Venezuela, Trinidade e Brasil. Neste trabalho nós apresentamos 17 novos registros em áreas da Venezuela e nordeste do Brasil. O padrão temporal dos dados ) e a proximidade da maioria das áreas de amostragem a regiões portuárias indicam que a espécie foi inicialmente introduzida no Atlântico pela água de lastro de navios navegando na rota India-Trinidade. No Brasil, a introdução parece estar associada ao movimento de navios em torno das plataformas de petróleo. No Maranhão e no Pará, a introdução está associada ao movimento de navios entre os portos próximos à foz do rio Amazonas. Alternativamente, a expansão de área desta espécie ao longo da costa da América pode ter acontecido através de dispersão larval, acompanhando as correntes em direção ao norte. Nós recomendamos o monitoramento desta espécie, bem como o desenvolvimento de estudos sobre sua ecologia em ambientes do Atlântico ocidental agora ocupados por ela.

Conclusions:The envenomation events were predictable and based on patterns involving multiple factors (environmental and/ or human behavior); however, the initially applied measures did not match the current recommendations of the Health Ministry of Brazil.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o processo de cicatrização da parede abdominal de ratos após a injeção intraperitoneal do extrato hidroalcóolico de Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi. MÉTODOS: Utilizaram-se 40 ratos da linhagem Wistar, distribuídos em dois grupos de 20 animais, cada um subdividido em dois subgrupos. Estes ratos foram mortos no 3º e 7º dias após a aplicação intraperitoneal do extrato. No grupo experimento, injetou-se uma única dose de extrato hidroalcoólico de Aroeira (100 mg por quilo de peso do animal) e no grupo controle uma única dose de solução salina isotônica a 0.9%. Após a morte dos animais, realizou-se o inventário da cavidade peritoneal à procura de aderências, seguido da ressecção da parede abdominal anterior englobando a ferida operatória para análise. As aderências foram classificadas pelos critérios de adesão de Nair. Realizou-se avaliação tensiométrica da parede abdominal através da medida da carga máxima suportada e da deformação máxima, medidos em máquina universal de ensaios do tipo Tiratest. Por fim, a avaliação histológica foi realizada através da coloração hematoxilina-eosina, com análise dos parâmetros: inflamação aguda, inflamação crônica, necrose isquêmica, reação gigantocelular do tipo corpo estranho, proliferação fibroblástica, fibrose, reepitelização e coaptação das bordas da sutura. RESULTADOS: A avaliacão macroscópica não revelou presença de aderências significativas entre a linha alba e as vísceras intra-abdominais nos grupos de estudo. A tensiometria demonstrou aumento significativo das variáveis carga máxima e deformação máxima (p=0,006 e p=0,000 respectivamente) entre os grupos controle e experimento de sete dias. A avaliação histológica intergrupos (controle e experimento) de três e sete dias não demonstrou alteração significativa para os parâmetros neoformação vascular, necrose, fibrose, reepitelização e coaptação das bordas da sutura. Notou-se diferença significativa para proliferação fibroblástica (p=0,014) na avaliação intergrupo de três dias, e para inflamação crônica (p=0,023) e reação gigantocelular do tipo corpo estranho (p=0,008) na avaliação intergrupo de sete dias. Na análise intragrupo controle, houve diferença significativa para inflamação crônica no subgrupo três dias, e, finalmente, na análise intragrupo experimento, observou-se diferença significativa para inflamação aguda e proliferação de fibroblastos (p=0,001 e p=0,020) no subgrupo de três dias em relação ao subgrupo de sete. CONCLUSÃO: A injeção intraperitoneal do extrato hidroalcoólico de Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi em laparotomias medianas de ratos não alterou a cicatrização na análise macroscópica e induziu a aumento da carga máxima de ruptura e deformação máxima da linha alba na análise tensiométrica. Na análise histológica, determinou efeito cicatrizante no subgrupo de animais experimento de três dias.
