Golgi Apparatus Regulates Plasma Membrane Composition and Function

Abstract: Golgi apparatus is the central component of the mammalian secretory pathway and it regulates the biosynthesis of the plasma membrane through three distinct but interacting processes: (a) processing of protein and lipid cargoes; (b) creation of a sharp transition in membrane lipid composition by non-vesicular transport of lipids; and (c) vesicular sorting of proteins and lipids at the trans-Golgi network to target them to appropriate compartments. We discuss the molecules involved in these processes and their i… Show more

“…Notably, Western blotting verified GOLPH2 upregulated in the apoV group, proving the reliability of the protein profile (Figure d). GOLPH2 is intimately related to the Golgi apparatus, which is the central component of the mammalian secretory pathway . It has been reported to be indispensable to the endochondral bone formation during early development as an interacting partner with osteogenic key proteins through Golgi-related trafficking .…”

“…The Golgi apparatus, a membrane subcellular organelle, is involved in sorting and processing lipids as well as proteins for cellular secretion [ 56 ]. However, the roles and potential mechanisms of Golgi apparatus-mediated ferroptotic neuronal death have not been reported, particularly in cerebral ischemic stroke [ 14 ].…”

“…In HSV-1, UL37 is necessary for productive viral replication, unlike in PrV, where PrV-ΔUL37 mutant viruses are productive, albeit at lower titers than the wildtype [ 80 ]. As a membranous compartment, the TGN lipid composition is mostly sphingolipids and cholesterol, which are similar attributes of the plasma membrane (PM) [ 82 , 83 ]. Our CGMD simulation for lipid interaction shows that UL37 interacts with lipid bilayers as a peripheral membrane protein (PMP), which interacts via the polar head groups of phospholipids.…”
