Golden sea cucumber extract revives glucose transporter-4 and interleukin-6 protein level in diabetic mouse muscle

Abstract: Background: Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced free radical oxidant activity resulted in muscle wasting due to protein carbonyl (PC), glucose transporter-4 (Glut-4), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) protein alteration. Antioxidant ingredient in the golden sea cucumber extract was found in promising level to inhibit free radical activity. Aim: This study was aimed to investigate the effect of golden sea cucumber extract on PC, IL-6, and Glut-4 level of STZ-induced diabetes mouse. Materials and Methods: This study was perform… Show more

“…Several plants, such as Nigella sativa, Mulberry juice, chicory, chamomile tea, bell pepper, and golden sea cucumber, can reduce blood glucose levels through their antioxidant properties. 33,34 Oxidative stress initiates inflammation via Nf-κβ and c-Jun N-kinases ( JNK). 35 The production of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α was regulated by a transcription factor, NF-kB.…”

“…At a dose of 125mg per mouse, 70% ethanol extract administered by gavage twice a day for 5 consecutive days could attenuate decreased body weight, decreased muscle mass, and glucose level in muscle in the STZ induced mouse model. Improvement of the muscle GLUT-4 and interleukin-6 (IL-6) protein levels, and reduction of the protein carbonyl level were the underlying mechanisms of action (Purwanto et al, 2019).…”

“…The experimental animals were adapted to the environment for 7 days and fed ad libitum. The diabetic rat models were created by inducing these rats with STZ [22][23][24][25]. The dose of STZ was 50 mg/kg body weight (BW) and administered by intraperitoneal injection.…”
